Chapter 7: Distraction or Attraction?

After the funeral, we decided to go to home and just take a rest after such a draining day. My dad and I ate dinner in silence, and I knew the wheels in his mind were turning as he tried to put whatever clues he could together. After interviewing everyone at prom, they all said the same thing: there wasn't anything suspicious going on at prom. His tech team was going through all the video surveillance they had.

We watched a movie after dinner as we made a vain attempt to get our minds off the funeral. All I could see was the casket, the roses, Chase's pale face... After the movie, I decided to go to bed and text Jonas to see how he was doing.

Me: Hey. How u holding up?

Jonas: Ok, I guess. My parents have barely said a word since we left.

Me: Yeah, same here.

Jonas: You're trying to distract yourself from all of this, aren't you?

Me: You know me so well :)

Jonas: I'm one of your best friends for a reason

Me: Thx Jonas

Jonas: I'll help you distract yourself then, ok? Umm, do u know what school you'll be going to in the fall?

Me: Yeah, I think I'm going to go to state .

Jonas: I think I'll be there too :)

Me: Hopefully we'll have lots of classes together.

Jonas: Yeah, hopefully. Do u think ur dad will buy u a car?

Me: I doubt it. If anything, I'll take the bus.

Jonas: I could always pick u up.

Me: Yeah, that should work. I think Dad will trust u enough to take me to class, lol

Jonas: What about besides class?

Me: ???

Jonas: I mean, do u trust me enough to take u other places? Maybe dinner...or a movie?

Me: Jonas, I'm not understanding what u r trying to say.

Jonas: I want to go out with u, Johanna

I stared at the screen. He wants to go out with me? Our friendship has been perfect this whole time. No, Jonas and me and Chase were all perfect the way we were. Good friends. Nothing more. But what's the worst that could happen if there was more?

Jonas: Hey, r u ok? I didn't mean to scare u or anything.

I typed back quickly.

Me: No, it's ok. I just wasn't expecting u to say that, that's all.

Jonas: Oh, ok. Well then, what's ur answer?

Me: My answer to what?

Jonas: Will u go out with me?

This could be a huge distraction to this investigation, I thought. Or...it could be an attraction that I never thought was possible.
