Jonas and I sat in my room rewiring our brains with this latest information.

"So, basically, all your dad is gonna do right now is investigate the food prep team again? What happens if he doesn't get any new info from them?"

I buried my face in my hands. "Then it means Chase's killer goes free."

"We can't let that happen, Jo," Jonas said.

I looked up and said, "I know, Jonas. So what do you want to do next?"

Jonas tapped his fingers on his knees as he tried to think. "Let's go talk to Carly again. Maybe there's something she didn't tell us last time. Or maybe there's something new she remembers now."

"Let's do it."

***

We soon began driving to Carly's house, once again hoping for answers. As we drove, Jonas spotted a Popeye's and we decided to make a quick stop for some chicken tenders and French fries since we hadn't had any lunch.

When we walked through the entrance, a long line had already formed, and we knew it would take forever before we got any food so we decided to try a different restaurant. As we exited, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed some serious PDA going on near the corner of the building between one of the employees and a redhead. Before I could avert my eyes, I realized that that head of red hair looked a bit familiar. Sophie. At that moment, she pulled away from the dude she was with and saw me. A look of recognition flashed across her eyes, and I knew I was in trouble.

"You've got to be kidding me! Are you guys stalking me now? I can't even hang out with my boyfriend in peace?"

Boyfriend? Then why on earth was Sophie trying to get all over Chase during prom?

Jonas, who didn't see Sophie before, quickly turned to the meltdown we were sure was about to happen.

The employee suddenly spoke up. "Sophie, what's wrong?"

Sophie rolled her eyes at the guy. "These are the two freaks I was telling you about. They've been interrogating me, following me, they--"

"Calm down, babe. I'm sure we can solve what's going on here," he interrupted.

I took a closer look at Sophie's boyfriend. He had dirty blonde hair, brown eyes, and was slightly tanned. He had a muscular build, and was taller than most guys his age. He walked towards me and Jonas and said, "Hey, I'm Ethan, Sophie's boyfriend."

I smiled at him politely and replied, "I'm Johanna, and this is my friend Jonas." Jonas came over and shook Ethan's hand.

"So, what's going on that's been making Sophie so upset lately? Ever since what happened at prom, it seems like she's been really jumpy because of you two."

I could tell Ethan wasn't trying to be rude. He was genuinely concerned about the well-being of his girlfriend.

Dag. What kind of guy is this? Someone who doesn't seem miserable while dating Sophie Robinson? Don't judge too quickly, Johanna. Maybe Sophie's not that bad of a person after all.

I looked over again at Sophie, and all she was giving me was death stares. Or maybe she is.

Jonas immediately explained to Ethan that although we did question Sophie at the funeral, the other times we had seen her (like today) were all coincidental. Ethan seemed to be mostly satisfied, went to put his arm around Sophie, and attempted to comfort her. I don't think he'll be very successful.

We shook hands with Ethan as we parted, said hi to Sophie (as she replied with a grunt), and made our way back to Jonas's car.

"Well, that was an interesting little encounter," I said.

"Yup."

"You wanna stop at a Wendy's and then go to Carly's?"

"Fine with me."
