I tried to pull myself together, and Jonas and I tried to determine our next steps.
"You wanna step out for a little while? We could go to the park or something. We could talk later about Ethan and see if we can get any info out of him." Jonas asked.
"Sure. Let me just ask my dad. He'll probably want an officer to come with us."
I talked to my dad for just a few seconds since he was busy at the crime scene.
"Bring Officer Wilson with you guys. And text me when you're back at the station."
"Will do, Dad."
Jonas and I got Officer Wilson, got into his police car, and drove to the park. The sun was starting to set and pink clouds appeared, and I realized we could only hold Sophie in jail for a few more hours unless something more incriminating came up. Jonas must have noticed my concern 'cause he turned to me and said, "We'll figure this out in time, Jo. We'll be okay." I wasn't so sure.
We reached the park and hopped out of the car, Officer Wilson close behind. Jonas and I walked side by side, allowing the evening breeze to relieve our stress. We walked by the playground, watching as mothers told their kids they could only play on the swings for five more minutes.
And that's when I heard it.
My head snapped towards what sounded like Darth Vader. A little boy played in the sandbox, shovel in hand, destroying his recently made sand castle.
"Come, storm troopers! We will defeat the jedi!" It wasn't what he said that mattered; it was the way he sounded. The boy wore a Darth Vader toy helmet. As he spoke, the helmet changed his voice to make him sound like Darth Vader himself. My breaths came out shakily as I saw who sat at a bench not too far from him.
The mystery girl.
She wore the same Harvard hoodie and large sunglasses, even though it was starting to get dark. She turned her head towards Jonas and me and hastily stood up. She didn't say a single word, but I did hear something else.
A sneeze. A high-pitched sneeze. The exact same sneeze Jonas and I heard when we talked to Ethan on the phone.
I grabbed Jonas's arm. "You heard what I heard, didn't you?" I asked, looking up at him.
"Definitely. We can't lose her this time, Jo. She's too important."
The girl was practically running towards the little boy now. She pulled on his arm, trying to get him to leave the sandbox and go with her. The little boy protested and began to whimper. I saw her lips moving, but I couldn't hear anything she said. I rushed over to Officer Wilson and tried to explain who the girl was as quickly as possible.
"I can't arrest her, Johanna. She hasn't done anything wrong that we know of," he replied.
The girl and boy were starting to walk away now.
"We don't need you to arrest her, sir!" Jonas exclaimed. "We need to know who she is! And now!"
Wilson shrugged and calmly walked towards the now running pair. Wilson started to jog.
"Excuse me, miss! Can I talk to you for a second?" he yelled.
The girl didn't turn her head, but I think the little boy was an angel in disguise. He pulled her arm as hard as he could to get her to stop running.
"The police officer is talking to you!" he screamed.
"Liam, we have to go!" the girl cried. My heart stopped. I recognized that voice. But it couldn't be. She would never do such a thing.
We finally caught up to them, but I almost didn't want to know whose eyes were hidden behind those glasses. Almost.
"Miss, we would just like to have a word with you," Wilson said.
She didn't let him continue. She spoke softly, "I know you want to do more than just talk."
She pulled back the hoodie, revealing a head of dark brown hair. She removed her glasses, and we looked into her equally dark brown eyes.
"Cassidy," I whispered.
A/N: Guys, you do not know how long I've been wanting to write about the mystery girl's identity!!! So....were you shocked? Did you have a feeling it was her? Vote and comment down below!
