My heart skipped two beats at the sound of Sophie's name.

She did it. She killed Chase.

My dad and his partner collected the copies of the contract Sophie signed. As we began walking out of the building, I turned to Jonas and said,

"Well, I guess we know who did it then," I sighed.

"How come you don't seem so happy about it?"

"It's just--I don't know. I feel like if Sophie killed Chase then...maybe she just wouldn't have been so...so overly dramatic when she's with us, you know? Like, I feel like a killer would keep as much to him or herself as possible if we were so close to the victim, you know?"

"I guess that makes sense, but right now everything is pointing to her, Jo."

"Yeah, I know," I replied softly.

Jonas and I went back to my house while my dad went over to Sophie's. She was going to be arrested for suspicion of murder. I felt no emotions, no sense of justification in finding the killer, no sadness that the killer might be someone we know.

I felt nothing.

Jonas and I didn't even watch a movie. We just sat on the living room couch and stared into space waiting for my dad to call us and tell us that Sophie was in custody.

Right on cue, my cellphone rang, and I saw that it was my dad calling me.

"Hey, Dad," I said flatly.

"Hey, kiddo. Listen, we have a problem, and we need you and Jonas's help."

"What's wrong?"

"She said she'll only talk to you."

***

Several minutes later, we had arrived at the police station. My dad stood waiting at the front desk.

"Where is she?" I asked.

"Follow me," he replied.

We rushed over to the interrogation room. Jonas and I slowly turned the doorknob and there she was.

"It's about time you showed up!"

I rolled my eyes.

"What's going on, Sophie?" I asked.

"You gotta tell your dad that I'm innocent. You know I'm not a killer. Sure, I may not like everyone--"

"You're telling me," I muttered.

Sophie's eyes narrowed. "I may not like everyone, but I am not a murderer."

"Then who is, Sophie?" Jonas groaned. "You bought the car. The salesman who was there told us."

"Look, I did buy the car, but..." her voice trailed off.

"But what, Sophie?" he said.

"I bought it because I had to. It wasn't even my money! I swear! I paid in cash! You know I don't have that kind of money."

"Why did you have to buy the car, Sophie?"

"I can't tell you that..." her face began to pale.

I knew that look. It was the same one Jonas and I had when we heard that phone call.

"Who threatened you, Sophie?"

Sophie fiddled with her hands with her head bowed.

"Sophie, you gotta tell us. If not, you're gonna be held responsible for this," Jonas said softly.

"I don't know," her voice but a whisper. Her eyes glistened with threatening tears.

"I got a phone call a few days ago. The person said that I had to go to this dealership and buy a car and leave it your driveway. When I got there, the salesman came straight to me like he knew me! He said the car was ready and the cash I sent was here. I didn't send anything. I signed the papers and drove the car out of the parking lot. Whoever it was was watching me 'cause a few minutes after I left the car at your house, they called me again."

"What did they tell you, Sophie?" I asked gently.

Tears were flowing down her cheeks rapidly now.

"They said 'We're even now'. That was the exact words. They said not to tell anyone about this and they'd be watching me."

"What did the voice sound like?" Jonas questioned.

"It was weird. It sounded like Darth Vader."
