(prompt 'forget'- 9th June 2017)
Once upon a time when the World began, God rested after creating the Earth and everything in and on it. Despite resting his body, His imagination went into overdrive, creating names for ALL the living things on Earth.
He had finished with the animals that lived on land, the birds that thronged the sky – and all the marine life in the sea. The trees had their names, and the plants and insects. God had saved the naming of the flowers until last because they were special to Him, and He wanted each and every one to be perfectly suited to its own particular beauty, with a meaning all its own.
Some would come to mean not only a beautiful perfume, but also a colour – like Lavender, and Violet, and Rose, while others would become girls' names as well – like Jasmine, and Lily and Heather. Some would also mean more than one flower – like Posy and Blossom – and Fleur, the French name for 'flowers',
But finally, God had to take another rest. He had been creating SO many names, for SO many things, for the l-o-n-g-e-s-t time...and He was in desperate need of a sit-down and a 'cuppa'.
As He relaxed, His mind sailing on the clouds clinging softly around Him, He happened to glance down, and to His surprise, there was a tiny blue flower standing at His feet, gazing adoringly up at Him. So delicate and sweet...but He could see it trembled with abject awe of Him and His power.
In a quivery voice, the tiny blue flower said, "Dear God, I'm sorry. You gave me a name already, but I'm so ashamed - I have forgotten it!" And the tiny blue head hung so low it nearly touched the ground, and if it had not been such a beautiful blue, it would probably have blushed quite 'pinkishly'.
This great God of Love reached His hand down most gently, and tenderly touched the tiny blue flower. "Your name is Forget-me-not – and I promise that you will be a most special symbol to many people for all kinds of reasons for centuries to come." The tiny blue flower could not believe it. Special? A symbol? Oh-h-h-h! And then God spoke again, in His enormous and most profoundly loving voice. "Lift up your tiny blue head and stand proudly, for you will be one of my most special 'chosen ones' to represent My Love, all over this most beautiful and precious Earth I have created."
And Forget-me-not stood on tiptoes to be as tall as possible. And she blossomed into many tiny flowers on each fine branch. And each and every flower was smiling and reflecting the most glorious blue of the sky above, and the deepest love and care of God himself.
Sometimes you'll see white Forget-me-nots. That's when they remember the awe and fear that first tiny blue flower felt when it approached God. And sometimes, there are pink Forget-me-nots. That's when they uncomfortably recall how embarrassed that first tiny blue flower felt when it couldn't remember its name.
We WILL remember, tiny Forget-me-not.
