Chapter 23
Deb was sitting in her living room. The TV was on Dr. Phil, but she wasn’t watching. She was crying. She was mad. For the first time in her life things weren’t going as she wanted.
With a swear word she got up, tears streaming down her face. They were not tears of unhappiness. They were the tears of a child whose father said no. Who didn’t get their way. She walked towards her bathroom, standing in front of the window. Her beautiful face was streaked with tears, and she had a hard expression in her eyes. What she saw made her even more furious. Quickly she opened the cold tap, splashing water on her puffy face. As hard as she tried, she couldn’t stop the sobs tearing through her. When she looked at herself again, all she could see was more mess. Slowly she slid down towards the floor, resting her back against the toilet.
She just came back from Andrew’s apartment. A cold Andrew. An Andrew that didn’t indulge her any more. It’s been about three months since she found out about Abi’s past. Three months during which she didn’t see much of him. She decided to be patient. Due to the heaviness of her plan she decided to wait a while. She truly believed it would die a quick death, and she would be ready with a shoulder for Andrew. During this period she saw very little of Andrew, but reassured herself that it was just a matter of time. When she did see him, it was fast and formal. Gone was the warm, welcoming, bearing Andrew. She knew the bitch had everything to do with his change.
Less than half an hour ago she decided to take the bull by the horns and approach Andrew. She knocked on his door, and as he answered, pushed past him. In the old days he would just allow this, but this time, part of his new, taken personality, he stood with the door open, a stern expression on his face.
“Deb? Can I help you?”
She ignored his formal tone, the irritated look in his eyes. Instead, she walked towards the kettle, turning it on to boil.
“Nope, I was just realising that it’s been a while since we had some quality time together.”
She stood against the cupboard, her heart pounding.
He frowned, and leaving the door open, he walked towards the kettle and turned it off. She could feel her face redden, but instead of screaming, she chirped:
“You don’t want coffee? That’s fine, let’s just chat.”
She made herself comfortable on his counter, her slender legs dangling, making sure he got a glimpse of her creamy thighs.
Andrew was now not even making an effort of being polite.
“What do you want Deb? I thought after our previous conversation we agreed that our friendship would end.”
She looked towards the floor.
Yes, their previous conversation. The day Andrew told her that he was in a relationship and didn’t think that their friendship was appropriate anymore. That day she thought it would not even last a month, and now, 3 months later, she had to step in. This was her last resort.
“I know Andrew, but I really miss you. Come on, it can’t be such a sin to have a friend?”
He sighed, and she could see that he was a little affected by her pathetic voice. She hid a smile, instead looking more pathetic. Big tears welled up in her baby blue eyes. He couldn’t resist this.
“Oh Andrew, it’s just that your friendship meant so much to me. I can’t believe you would allow some jealous bitch of a woman to influence you so much.”
