Chaper 27

Andrew had just landed and took a taxi to his hotel.  He took in all the sights and sounds, but he couldn’t get rid of the feeling of being incomplete.  He could just imagine his Tinkerbell’s face.  She appreciates anything, and a trip to America would get her over the moon.  He had a few places he wanted to take her.  As he checked in, he had one thing on his mind.  Call Abi.  She would probably be sleeping, but she promised that she would wake up for his call.  He tipped the bell boy, and settled in to his hotel room.  Eagerly he picked up the hotel room telephone and dialled her number.  After a few seconds, it rang.  And rang.  Slightly frowning, he pressed redial.  Again it just rang out.  She was probably sleeping, but he needed to hear her voice so badly, so he tried again.  He was just about to give up when the phone stopped ringing, and he could hear her voice.

“Hello?”

He smiled, barley able to contain his excitement.

“Sweetheart!  Did I wake you?”

There was silence.

“Abi, can you hear me?”

Again, hesitation.  Something was off.

“Abi?”

At last she spoke, and even though the line wasn’t clear, he could hear that there was something majorly wrong.

“I can hear you.  I spoke to Deb. You should know that I came to the conclusion that it would be better for me if we just forgot about everything and moved on.  I don’t want to see you ever again.  For all I care you can stay in America forever.”

Andrew felt his heart drop.  What was happening?

“Abigail, listen, what happened?  I don’t know what you are talking about?”

She kept quiet, and he could hear her sob on the other side of the line.

“I just can’t believe you would tell her about what happened to me.  Of everything that ever happened to me, you just dealt the worst blow.  No one ever gave me hope just to take it away and trample on it.  At least the rapists were clear with their intentions from the beginning.”

The receiver went dead.  Andrew just sat on the bed, staring at the telephone in his hand.  He was shocked to absolute stillness.  Her words sunk in, springing him to action.  He redialled, but her cell phone was turned off.  She didn’t have a land line.  He swore, frustrated.  Why do shit like this happen when he was in another fucking country, he thought.  For a moment he stopped, thinking of what she said.  She mentioned Deb.  How the fucking hell does Deb know about Abi?  Obviously she bumped into Deb when she went to drop off his car, but it didn’t make sense?  For a moment he dropped his head in his hands.  Abi told him that he hurt her more than the rapists did.  For her to say something like that.  Suddenly he was furious.  How is it that she always believed the worst of him?  With a jerk he picked up the phone again, only to hear her voicemail.  Still off.  He went through their conversation again.  She obviously broke up with him, but he wasn’t going to take it seriously.  And then she spoke of Deb.  She is under the impression that he told Deb about the incident.  This time his anger was no longer aimed towards Abi, but to the bitch living next door.  Deb was pure evil, and she needed to burn in hell.  He took his cell phone, looking up her cell phone number.  With deliberate movements, he dialled her number, patiently waiting.

Deb felt like she made progress in her plan to annihilate Abi.  She saw the expression on her face, the tears.  It was clear that she hit a nerve.  She wanted to break Abi, and she was halfway there.  The look of shock and disbelieve, mixed with pure humiliation made her want to sing and dance.  As she lay in bed, she felt happy.  It was clear that Abi wasn’t impressed with Andrew telling her everything.  Not that she needed to know that Andrew didn’t say a word.  She knew she planted enough doubt to kill any relationship.  Who knew, maybe she didn’t even need to start phase two of her plan.  Maybe today was enough.

She jumped as her cell phone suddenly rang.  Who would phone her at this ungodly hour?  She glanced at the number.  Maybe it was a client. She answered warmly, but the voice on the other side chilled her to the bone.

“What the fuck did you do?”  It was Andrew.  He was speaking very softly, but she could hear he was fighting for control.  She swallowed, pressing her lips together.

“Excuse me?  Who is this?  I find it very...”

His cold voice cut her off.

“Deb, stop playing games.  What did you say to Abi?”  Still soft, but very threatening.  She pushed out her chin, not willing to end without a fight.

“What are you talking about Andrew?  Why would I say anything to your precious Abigail?”  She didn’t even try to hide the hatred in her voice.  She jumped as he suddenly spoke, louder, clearly losing his patience.

“Stop your lying and games Deb.  You are testing me.”

She laughed, an ugly expression on her face.

“Oh, get over yourself Andrew.  Why would I even...”

“Now you listen to me.  When I get back from America, expect a visit from me.  You can be very grateful that I’m not there today, because I would personally come and break your neck.”

His words were clear and it gave her chills.  Andrew was furious with her.  He bit off his the words:

“You do anything to ever harm Abi again, be it verbally, or, and may God be with you, physically, you will regret it.  You are a sick person Deb.  Just get the fuck over whatever issues you have with us.”

Deb was shivering now, silently listening.

“I don’t know where you heard of Abi’s past, I can only imagine you snooped around in my office and found something that could give you a lead.  I’m not stupid Deb, just surprised that you can go to such measures. You will regret today.”

With that he smashed down the receiver, leaving a stubbed Deb on the other side.  She could feel tears well up.  Never has Andrew ever spoken to her like that.  She slowly stood up, her body still shivering.  Abi was to blame for all of this.  The little bitch drove this wedge between her and Andrew, and as long as she was in the picture, things would be like this between them.  She had an insane look on her face.  Her perception of right and wrong is so twisted, she didn’t even care anymore.  She had to finish this.  Andrew will feel bad for the phone call, and his eyes will open the moment Abi is gone.  Then he’d be back in her arms, right where he belonged.  All that mattered was that Andrew would love her, and in her twisted brain, she believed this would only happen if she got rid of Abi.
