Aunt Leila's barbecue was tonight. Nathan was already next door and i could hear the music playing and people talking down in Aunt Leila's backyard. i was brushing my hair, trying to decide whether to tie it up or keep it down. i sighed. i haven' t even chosen what to wear yet. (yeah, i'm basically sitting on my bed in a towel...)

my phone buzzed.

Nathanator: pick up the pace, princess ;)

i rolled my eyes. "alright, alright." i grumbled to myself and walked to my closet. i remembered Aunt Leila telling me yesterday to wear something cute for Cameron. ugh. he's my neighbor for crying out loud! he's seen me in a lot of my un-cute moments.

i rummaged through my closet and finally found something presentable. it was a mint green, cotton sundress with thin straps and a thin beige ribbon around the waist. it ended a couple inches above my knee so it was casual enough to wear at a backyard barbecue but dressy enough to impress.... hopefully.

by the time i got it on, i didn't have time to do my hair anymore so i just ran my fingers through my wavy hair and left it that way. i dashed down stairs and found a pair of flat, tan, strappy sandals. i put them on and i was on my way.

when i arrived at Aunt Leila's, the party seemed to be in full swing. all the neighbors were around already. i waved to Nathan, who was manning the barbecue, and stood around by the table of snacks to get a drink.

i was quietly sipping my blue lemonade and watching everyone at the party when someone tapped my shoulder.

"hey."

i turn around to find Cameron there, just as i expected. i smile at him. "hi." i reply. "you look nice." i say, taking a look at his outfit. it was pretty simple. just an olive green v-neck and khaki shorts. he grinned. "thanks." he said. "you look beautiful, as always." i blushed. "plus," he added, pointing to his green shirt and my green dress. "we match."

i laughed. he offered me his arm and i took it. he leaned in and whispered in my ear. "now as much as you are the life of the party," he said sarcastically. "i need you to step away from the refreshments table and actually enjoy yourself." i rolled my eyes. "i can have plenty of fun with mini sandwiches and blue lemonade." i shot back.

he smirked. "how 'bout having a little fun with me?"

before i knew it, he was pulling me towards the center of the lawn, where most of the other guests were dancing. "always a performer, aren't you?" i tell him. he just shrugs and takes my left hand and positions my right hand on his shoulder.

"you gonna slowdance me to R5?" i asked sarcastically. (woohoo shout out to the R5 Family) Cameron just smiled and spun me. "Here comes forever." he said. i just laughed at the cheesiness of the whole thing. we just kept dancing for a while, swaying to the mid-tempo music. after a bit, he looked at me.

"hey, i've been thinking." he said. i laughed. "that's a first." i teased. he laughed. "hey, here me out first." i nodded trying to keep a straight face. "okay, okay."

"so, i've been thinking." he repeated. "wanna be my girlfriend?"

i searched his face for signs that he was joking. "no kidding?" i asked. "why would i?" he countered. i took a deep breath. "yup." he grinned. so did i.

--------

the song ended and we left the backyard to take a walk. Cameron was holding my hand. it was quiet down our street. we could hear the sounds of the party fading with every step.  i heard Cameron humming 'Lucky' by Jason Mraz under his breath.

i smiled. "stop it." i said. he looked at me. "stop what?" he asked.

"being the sweetest person ever." i gave his hand a squeeze.
