Surprise!

Lucy woke up early one Saturday morning, and looked at her sleeping husband. She slipped out of bed, and quietly crept down the stairs. She went into the kitchen, and pulled out the pancake recipe that Gru favored. He made this for herself and the girls on a fairly regular basis, but he never had anyone make him breakfast.

When they had first gotten married, Gru had tried to teach her how to cook, but they had both given up on the idea after a few tries. She was simply better at things like laundry, cleaning, or grocery shopping. So, they balanced the responsibilities between them, and he took on the cooking, because it was made painfully obvious that she could not cook.

However, she was determined. She wanted to surprise him, and she would work as hard as she had to in order to do so.

She got out the eggs, milk, flour, and sugar. She began to add each ingredient one at a time, slowly and carefully measuring each one.

She began to hum to herself. Everything was going smoothly. She giggled with anticipation. Gru was going to be so surprised!

She poured all of her carefully measured ingredients into the mixing bowl, and turned on the electronic mixer.

Suddenly, all of the pancake batter started flying everywhere! Lucy screamed, and ducked down. What did she do wrong? She had been so careful! Clearly she did not understand how to use this mixer.

Gru woke with a start. Then, he heard a scream. Lucy!

He ran down the stairs as fast as he could, looking everywhere for his wife. Then, he ran into the kitchen, and laughed out loud. His wife was huddled below the counter, and there was batter everywhere! He switched off the mixer.

"Are you alright?" He asked her with a smile.

"I just wanted to surprise you." She said, looking disappointed. "And now look what I've done. All I've done is make a mess."

"Oh, you surprised me, all right!" He laughed. "But, I have a feeling that this was not what you were hoping for."

She smiled and looked at him.

"No. It wasn't." She replied, bashfully.

"Here, let's clean this up, and then I can help you." He suggested.

"Ok!" She leapt up, with an excited look on her face.

They cleaned the batter off of, well, everything. It had sprayed all over the entire kitchen.

Then, she pulled out all of the ingredients again, and he helped her measure them all out. She knew that she needed to be paying attention to what she was doing, but she couldn't help, but notice his strong arms around her as he guided her movements.

Finally, they had a stack of beautiful, golden pancakes. Granted, they didn't look as nice as Gru's normally did, but to both of them, they were perfect.

Gru still had his arms around her, even though they had finished cooking. They looked into each other's eyes. Just as their lips touched, they heard behind them:

"Can I be the first to say, EW!"

They turned around and saw their daughters, who, unknown to them until this moment, had been watching them the whole time.
