Lucy hung up the phone and sighed. She and Gru had another mission to report to. It seemed that, recently, that was all that they were doing. The two of them had hardly been at home at all. Their daughters had been spending a lot of time with Dr. Nefario. Occasionally, they went with Gru's mom, but Gru was never a fan of that option. She walked downstairs to deliver the news to Gru.

She found him in the living room. He was looking at something on his computer, but turned it off when she came in the room. She sat down next to him.

"I just got another call from Silas." She said to him. He sighed.

"When do we need to report?" He asked.

"About an hour," she said.

He nodded, taking her hand in his.

"Well, Nefario has the night off." He sighed again. "We'll have to drop the girls off at mom's."

She nodded.

"I'll go get them ready." She felt awful. She knew that they had been gone so much. They had hardly spent any time with their daughters. She wanted more than anything to stay here with them, but she knew that she couldn't. Not this time. She and Gru would make it up to them.

She came up to their door. She hesitated, then pushed it open.

The girls were sitting on their floor, playing with their Barbies. They looked up expectantly when she walked in.

"Hey, girls," she said, as she sat down next to them.

"Do you want to play with us, Mommy?" Agnes asked, holding up one of the dolls.

"I can't, honey," she said. "I just came in here to tell you that you three are going to spend the night at Grandma's tonight."

"Oh, ok." Margo said. The other two nodded.

"We've got to leave in about 15 minutes." She added.

The girls started to put away their dolls, and get out their overnight bags. She helped all of them pack their bags, and get them into the car.

They drove to her mother-in-law's in silence. When they arrived, Gru got their bags into the guest room that they were staying in. When the girls were all settled, they began their hugs and kisses.

They got to Edith last, and both gave her an extra tight hug. Edith was always so brave about everything.

"Mom? Dad?" She asked.

They nodded.

"Why do you guys always have to leave?"

"Well, honey," Lucy started. "Our job is very important, and right now it's requiring a lot from us."

"I know." Edith replied. "But, aren't we important too?"

The little girl's eyes were starting to well up with tears. Lucy grabbed Gru's hand. This was looking very familiar to her.

"Of course you are, honey!" Gru insisted. "You are very important to us, and we love you so much. We just have to go now."

Edith wiped away her tears, and gave her parents another hug. She and her sisters waved as her parents walked out the door.

Gru walked to the car, then realized that his wife wasn't with him. He turned around to see that she was still standing on the front porch.

"Honey," he said, walking back to her. "We need to go."

"I did that exact same thing." She whispered.

"What?" He asked.

"When I was little. My parents were leaving on a mission. It was on Christmas Eve and I was so upset." She went on.

"Oh, you mean with Edith." He said. "She'll be fine. She understands."

"But I was just like them. Watching my parents leave when I wanted them most." She was shaking.

"Lucy, honey, they're going to be ok. We'll see them again soon." He reassured her.

"No, you don't understand." She said. "They dropped me off there, and next thing I remember is waking up in an orphanage." She burst into tears.

He hastily pulled her to him, letting her cry on his shoulder.

"Shh. Shh. It's ok. They're safe. Nothing is going to happen to them." He cooed, stoking her back.

"But how do you know?" She asked, still crying. "What if something happens to us, and they have to go back to that orphanage?" She started crying harder.

"Lucy, listen to me." He held her back, so that he could look straight into her eyes. " I will never ever let them go back there. If something happens to us, then I have people who will take care of them. Nefario, my mom, all of the minions. I won't let them go back there."

He pulled her back to him, and continued to stroke her back.

"Are you going to be ok?" He whispered in her ear.

She nodded, and they both made their way toward the car.
