“I don’t want food,” Leighton grumbled. The thought alone was enough to make her stomach twist into knots. Stefan had taken them to a diner to get coffee and something to eat and luckily it was practically empty.
It was a “retro” diner that was modelled after the classic look from the past with deep red chairs, varnished wooden tables and matching booths in the corners of the room. Most diners now followed the bright colour trend which included bright plastic tables and chairs.
“At least drink your coffee,” Stefan pushed it closer towards her before taking a big sip of his which had cooled slightly.
They had been there for five minutes already, “Here’s your breakfast plate," The polite waitress sat the big plate between them which had all the trimmings; bacon, eggs, hash browns, sausages, fried tomatoes and garlic mushrooms.
Stefan was quick to snag a piece of bacon while it was hot and it was perfect, well for bacon anyway although Leighton was feeling queasy just from the sight and smell. There was no way she was going to attempt to eat anything on that plate.
The sight of the coffee was almost too much.
“I just want to sleep.”
Even though Leighton was feeling queasy she knew it would pass and still hadn’t given up on her plan. The fresh air had sobered her up slightly but her common sense hadn’t overridden her desire to tick number three off her list for getting over Elijah and the pain.
Seeing Elijah had made her feel worse, not that Leighton thought that was even possible. Why does the universe always have to prove me wrong? Leighton asked silently.
“Fine,” Stefan stood to his feet and grabbed his wallet; putting a twenty dollar note on the table.
Leighton held in the smirk and stood to her feet also before she followed Stefan out of the diner.
“I’ll take you back to your place,” Stefan said as he hailed a taxi with the wave of his hand. He was going to watch over her, and make sure Elijah kept his distance. Clearly Leighton wanted nothing to do with Elijah, at least not yet.
Leighton shook her head, “No Elijah will be there or at least nearby.”
“Leighton-” Stefan started.
“Please Stefan,” Leighton begged.
“Are you in or out?” The old man yelled through the open window.
Stefan sighed before he opened the back door for Leighton, “Fine. Get in; we’ll find somewhere you can sleep it off.”
“Okay,” Leighton smiled before she got in the taxi. Now that she was starting to sober up; the cold was sending chills all over her body leaving her teeth to chatter slightly.
“The closest motel thanks,” Stefan spoke to the driver after he got in the car and closed the door. Stefan knew Leighton was right. Elijah would be waiting for them near Leighton’s house; the one she shared with Jen and Halley off campus.
Stefan had only just gotten Leighton alone; he wasn’t going to give her up. Knowing Elijah he has probably compelled someone living close to Leighton to be a spy for him. Stefan kept the thought to himself. He didn’t want to worry Leighton.
“Do you want my jacket?” Stefan asked; it was practically an automatic reaction to the teeth chattering sound.
“I’ll be alright; besides we aren’t that far away from the motel,” Leighton shrugged her shoulders. She was about to have Stefan right where she wanted him.
Leighton just hoped he would take the bait.
“I’ll sleep in the chair; you can have the bed,” Stefan spoke as he sat at the small table and kicked off his shoes. The room was standard with a king sized bed, a small kitchen area and small bathroom. It was the only spare room; the others were either taken or under renovation. The walls were a light yellow colour but everything else was bright.
It was too bright.
“That chair looks uncomfortable and painful. We can share the bed,” Leighton had already slipped off her shoes and was sitting on the edge of the bright green doona which matched the pillows.
Leighton had thought Stefan was a creep at first, but now since finding out the truth she was feeling a sudden attraction towards him, and had decided it was the alcohol messing with her mind.
“Then I’ll sleep on the floor,” Stefan shrugged as if it was no big deal, and to him it wasn’t. He had slept in worst places.
“That looks just as bad,” Leighton replied. The carpet was stained and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months.
“Well than I guess I won’t sleep,” Stefan had also gone without sleep on many occasions; sometimes intentionally and other times not.
“Stefan . . . Stop being ridiculous,” Leighton made sure not to beg; she didn’t want to sound desperate even though that was exactly how she was feeling. Desperate to keep herself distracted from her problems and the new crazy world.
Surely he won’t still be insisting on sleeping on the floor if I take my clothes off . . . Will he? Leighton wondered. Usually she didn’t have to beg to get a guy in bed with her; not that she slept around a lot.
“You’re drunk Leighton-”
“Actually I’m just tipsy now. I’ll prove it. Z Y X W V U T S R Q P O N M L-”
“You need sleep Leighton,” Stefan interrupted before she could finish.
Leighton just narrowed her eyes in determination before she stood to her feet and walked in a straight line.
“That doesn’t prove anything,” Stefan disagreed.
Leighton moved onto closing her eyes and touching her nose with her fingers; taking turns with each arm.
Stefan chuckled slightly and shook his head, “Fine you’re not wasted anymore, but you’re still under the influence of alcohol.”
“I’ll behave," Leighton replied after she opened her eyes and hid a hand behind her back crossing her fingers.
Stefan didn’t know if he could believe her or not, but after a few seconds of deliberation he decided the bed did look much more comfortable than the chair or the floor. Besides he was only going to sleep and nothing more; no matter what Leighton tried.
He’d never taken advantage of a drunken girl before and he wasn’t going to start now; he couldn’t risk ruining the progress he had made with Leighton. Especially considering he thought he had screwed it all up with Leighton beyond repair.
“Fine but the dress stays on.”
“Why? Don’t think you’ll be able to control yourself otherwise?” Leighton teased as Stefan stood to his feet.
“I thought you were going to behave?” Stefan asked.
“This is me behaving,” Leighton smirked before she pranced over to the bed and got under the sheets and blankets. They were warm and comforting, and Leighton could feel sleep trying to drag her under.
No I’m not ready yet. Leighton started the struggle as Stefan was next to get under the covers.
“Goodnight Leighton,” Stefan rolled over.
“I’m not tired,” Leighton somehow managed to hold in the yawn.
“You sound tired,” It was taking Stefan a lot of effort to keep his distance from Leighton when he wanted nothing more than to wrap her up in his arms. He knew the doppelganger curse was partly responsible for sparking the desire to be near her, but he also knew it was more than that or at least he needed to believe it was more than that.
Stefan had already partly fallen for Elena before they met properly for the first time. By observing he got to see who Elena was, her fears and her desires and the same had happened with Leighton.
“I don’t want to go to sleep.”
“You’ll feel better in the morning.” Stefan reluctantly rolled over and faced Leighton.
“Are you still in love with Elena?” Leighton asked and Stefan was caught off guard by her question. Stefan knew he would always love Elena, but he wasn’t in love with her anymore, but he was still slightly angry.
He was always trying to be the good guy; he had made mistakes but he tried to move on from them and be a better person yet Damon didn’t start trying to be a better person until he fell for Elena, and even then he still made terrible mistakes Elena still wanted him. It made Stefan feel like  all his hard effort was a waste of time; that it didn’t matter how much he tried to make up for his mistakes he would always get pushed aside for the person that didn’t try.
“No. How’d you know that-?”
“I assumed. I see the hurt in your eyes when you look at her,” Leighton slithered closer. The alcohol was leaving her system too quickly for her liking, and she was tempted to raid the mini bar but knew Stefan would stop her.
“It was a long time ago now,” Stefan replied. Leighton was only an embryo when Elena broke his heart.
“How long?” Leighton was getting closer to Stefan who was too caught up in his thoughts to notice. He didn’t like thinking about his past much. The painful memories seemed to outweighed the happy ones.
“It doesn’t matter now,” Stefan only just realised how close Leighton had gotten to him; it was comforting and almost healing his wounds.
“I guess we have something in common,” Leighton moved her hand and rested it against the side of his face; if she hadn’t gotten used to Elijah’s cold skin than she would’ve felt the urge to flinch.
It still amazed her, and also irritated her to think she fell for Elijah’s stupid slow circulation lie. It made her wonder if he was ever truthful with her like Leighton had been with him.
“I ignored Halley and hit on you and then made out with Halley; I’m a creep remember?” Stefan tried a different tactic. He was trying to remind Leighton of their first meeting, and how she felt.
“Why did you stare into my eyes like that?” Leighton asked and made sure to keep her close contact. Leighton only remembered because guys usually stared at her chest. They never spent more than a second just looking into her brown eyes.
It was odd.
“It’s a vampire thing. I’ll tell you in the morning when you’re sober,” Stefan replied hoping Leighton would roll over and go to sleep.
To Leighton the word vampire still felt surreal.
“Why’d you make out with Halley after ignoring her?”
“I was disappointed, and I knew Elena was coming to the club. It was stupid.”
“You were drunk?”
“Only a little,” Stefan replied. It was almost intoxicating; being so close to Leighton, and having her hand resting against his face.
“You know most guys don’t care if the girl is drunk or tipsy,” Leighton pointed out; she felt practically sober.
“I’m not most guys,” Stefan replied and Leighton realised in that moment that it didn’t matter what she said or did. Stefan wasn’t going to sleep with her, and help her finish her three step plan.
“Goodnight Stefan,” Leighton replied and kissed Stefan on the cheek before she went back to her side of the bed and rolled over. Now sleep was the only option to keep the Elijah thoughts and the pain at a distance.

THANKS for reading! Did you enjoy it?
I AM so SORRY it took me so long to update. I still don't know what I'm doing with this story yet villian wise so the updates are going to be slow because I'm working on an original book as well as my Derek Hale romance series. There's not enough time in a day anymore. SORRY.
