In the realm that I have created for further story use, when somebody dies abruptly in a way that would scar them permanently, they are given two choices. They can either
1- be reborn or 'resuscitate' into a new body. Most cases of this result in the new body either being related to how they died or their name. In some cases, both.
Or
2- go into hell and not be resuscitated.
They go to hell because after a while God, or the 'Omnipotent' realized that more people weren't coming to his heaven but to hell, and he figured that the people who had earned their way into heaven wouldn't mind their sacrifice if it meant everybody else got to live in paradise without them. After all, the only way to get into heaven was to be an extraordinary good person, mostly selfless or babies.
Whenever somebody dies they keep the age of the body they died in. For example, if somebody who was 15, like Cyprus, died when they resuscitated they would be 15. If somebody who was 24, like Kurtis [Hah, just realized nobody really knows Kurtis yet], died they would be resuscitated as a 24 year old again. Appearances can change, but they should never be too far from average. Also, face and eye shape stay the same as well. Whenever somebody is resuscitated, they can't age, either. Most people will seek doctors who have been resuscitated to help them age because if you tell somebody who is living for the first time about resuscication you would die along with that person as a penalty. Because of this there is a world hidden to ours where the resuscitated can roam freely, without fear of first-timers discovering them.
So, Cyprus is special and the main character of this story because he has died multiple times and continues to be resuscitated. You can only be resuscitated once, and that's a fact, so people were convinced that he was taking those deaths. It takes 3 days time to resuscitate, under which your body would change into a new one. Rapid hair growth/shortening, muscle developing/undeveloping, eyes changing color, ect.. So he is shot in front of many witnesses and they take his body away to see if he will resuscitate. Unfortunately, he does, and in a much more powerful form, so they aren't able to pin him down before he escapes.
Yadda yada yada
He is killed and resuscitated a total of 23 deffinete times within the first 10 chapters
