Everyone is born with a string. Be it a red, blue, or even a rainbow colored one. It ties us to our soul mates. Our destined ones, whom we spend our entire lives with. And everyone gets their strings when they turn the age of five.

I remember that day as clear as ever. My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Abott, explaining what they were, how we first got them, what they symbolized. I remember that day, I made the biggest mistake of my life.

"These stings", my teacher started holding up her string I presumed was there, "binds up with the one we were ment to be with. Our one and only true love. Now any questions?", she finished. One girl, Emily, who turned out to be my future bully and ex-best friend, raised her hand and waited until she was called upon.
"What if oursh is a different color than other peoplesh?", she asked her 's' a kind of slur since her front two teeth were missing and just waiting to grow in.
Mrs. Abott clapped her hands and said a quick 'good question Emily'. Then, explained further that it represented our partners favorite color and their color would be our favorite color.
"Now any other questions?"
I slowly rose my hand not sure if i should ask or not. Seeing my hand Mrs. Abort picked on me.
"What if someone didn't have a string?", I asked a bit hushed, you see I was a very shy child.
Then the laughing started. And not from the other students among me. No, it was from the teacher herself. She was laughing at my question like it was some kind of joke. When she was finally able to breathe properly again and her laugh became nothing but small snickers here and there, she looked back up and finally for good stopped when she spotted my worried face.
Clearing her throat she asked me in a very serious tone. "Why do you ask this Amber?"
Giving out a small shakey sigh, I said seven words that ended my social life chances in second grade. "Because I don't have a string ma'am".
