x || chapter tenIn a series of unfortunate events, I end up watching my father happily oblige into offering me up as a weekend babysitter for the Hansons. Because apparently, I needed to get out of the house, but I knew the reason was more surreal than that. My father had somehow managed to get the truth as to why I had been all moody. It only took a new pair of cleats and a new dress, but he did it.
And this is what ended up happening; the parent trap, but flipped around, involving two teenagers who were once friends but aren't anymore. Mrs. Hanson practically did back flips when my dad offered, because if anyone hated our feud more than us, it was Mrs. Hanson.
So here I was, Friday night, standing in the foyer of the Hanson house with an overnight bag—just in case Jack didn't show up when he was supposed too. Which was a bet I didn't want to place my money on.
The twins run up and greet me with warm hugs, both profusely quite when I asked them how they were. Of course, the sisters of Jack were exactly like him; closed off and made little effort in making their guest feel welcome.
"Okay, I need to go, but we should be back tomorrow morning!" Ethan says cheerfully, kissing the twins on top of their heads. "I'll call around bedtime, so I can say goodnight."
He grabs his suitcase, kisses his baby Sophie on the forehead and then hands her over to me. I smile down at the infant, her no-teethed smile shining up at me.
"Okay, my wife is going to m-u-r-d-e-r me if I don't leave now! Thank you again, Lucia!" He waves bye and slams the door. Almost instantly, the twins run off towards their bedroom, leaving me and the baby alone with only the sound of Wonder Pets playing softly in the background.
"Just me and you kid," I whisper, walking over and settling into the comfort of the couch.
Sophie's eyes begin fluttering closed and within a few minutes, she's softly snoring.
I smile and lean my head back, practically begging a god that I'll get lucky and miss an interaction with Jack tonight.

After several hours of painting, pretending, and screaming, both of the girls managed to end their day with little to no objections. I managed to make homemade pizza with some help of the twins, trick them into a bath, and make a fort with little resources so they could "sleep like the caveman". Sophie was much less of a hassle when it came to nightly routine—food, bath, and then straight to bed.
Luckily through all this, Jack hadn't managed to make it back home. So, with nothing else left to do, I grab a towel from the closet and let the bathtub fill up with warm water.
As the water reaches the brim of the tub, I slip in and turn off the water. Today's worries slide right off my body and into the water, causing a sigh of relief to bubble up to the surface.
Minutes pass and the water turns cold, so I pull the plug, step out and wrap the towel around my body. The closest bedroom would probably be Jacks, and I wanted nothing more but to slide into the warm comfort of my sweats. I grab my bag and slide into Jacks room, dropping the towel the second my toes touch the cushion of his carpet.
"Yeah, there's no one—Lucia!!"
A blood-curdling scream rips through the house as I come face to face with a shocked Jack. The poor girl standing behind him stands frozen in place, confusion eating it's way into her emotions.
"Get out!" I yell, "out!"
He trips his way back out of the room and closes the door, leaving me naked and shivering in the middle of his bedroom.
