x || chapter fifteen - JackThe night had taken a shift for the hangover tomorrow road the second Lucia finished off the vodka. I'd never seen her take what people said into account, but the second Maya called her a party pooper, her mood instantly changed and she became this wild reckless girl.
I wasn't complaining because we were in the same vicinity and not down each other's throat. But this wasn't how I wanted our first official friendly night to go. Because there was no way she'd ever remember this in the morning.
The girls had abandoned the movie and turned on some music that was now currently blasting through the speakers as they danced on the coffee table. It was a hot sight to see, their bodies so close. Snippets of her sun kissed skin showed when she lifted her dress that she only recently changed in too.
Kale and I locked eyes, both of us sharing the same thought.
"Jack!" Lucia yells over the music, hopping onto the couch from the table. She lands with a plop and moves her body over mine, and if I moved my neck in any way I'd be able to get a glimpse of her panties. "Why do you always look so brooding?"
"Brooding?" I chuckle, "that's new."
"Well stop, it's ruining my fun."
She steps away from me and takes her place back on the table. She was alone up there now. Maya had dropped onto Kales lap and they were currently deep into a make-out session.
The last girl I'd kissed was Reed Bishop, but that was only to find some distraction from the beautiful girl dancing before me. Lucia was becoming my un-doing.
"Why don't we give them some privacy?" I offer, pulling her off the table. She steadies her legs on the hardwood floor before we move away from Kale and Maya. She snatches a beer as we make our way up the stares. I guide Lucia into her room and sit the furthest distance away.
She sits on her bed and twists open the beer. She hesitates, drawing the beer away from her parted lips.
"Why'd you leave?" She whispers.
"I had too," I breathe. "You know that already."
She nods and finishes the journey with her beer to her mouth. I watch her drink it all, I watch her pause to breathe—lick her lips. I watch the small bit escape and dribble down her chin, her tongue moving to clean it up.
I squeeze my fists at my side and shift in the seat. She then lets her hair down, and all restraint is lost.
I jump up from my seat and take her against the wall, her breath escaping her lungs with a soft gasp.
"Jack—"
"No, don't." I snap, "I—you need to stop doing that."
"I don't . . . I don't know what I'm doing."
I chuckle and lean in, not close enough to where our lips touch, but just enough.
"You're so beautiful, Lucia." I smile, "and I of all people don't deserve you. I hate that you will never forgive me for leaving, but I'm sorry and I will spend the rest of my life making up for it."
"You don't have to make up for anything," she places her hands on my chest, "just don't leave me again."
I pull away and she straightens out the non-existent wrinkles on her dress. The tension in the room has doubled since we got in here, but it's the kind of tension that can't be avoided. If I want to keep our friendship where it was, I had to avoid it.
It's what Lucia would want.
