x | chapter twenty
"Dad!" I quickly scream, backing away from her and up the stairs. The screen door swings open and out steps my dad, his emotions churning from worry to anger.
"Lucia, go inside!" My dad growls, walking down the steps to meet her. I do as I'm told and watch through the screen door as my mom tries to explain why she is here. I glance out the window and see jack standing on his front porch, watching the whole interaction. Eventually he catches my eyes and I motion for him to come around through the back door.
A few seconds later, he steps inside, quickly wrapping his arms around me.
"Don't fight it Luc, embrace my pity hug."
I laugh and wrap my arms around Jack's waist, immediately sinking into the hug. "So, " I say, pulling away. "I know my mom is the topic of choice, but I need to clear up something before I get myself to distracted to ask."
Jack nods, allowing me to continue.
"Did we do anything last night?"
Jacks smile turns into laughter, "no Lucia, we did nothing but sleep."
"Good. Great." I say, finding myself somewhat upset again. I wasn't ready to deal with the replica of me standing at the foot of my porch.
"Did she say anything to you?" Jack asks, breaking the silence.
"She didn't get the chance to, I called for my dad the second I saw her."
"Do you have any idea why she's back?""Other than to ruin my life all over again?" I say sarcastically.
Jack's face falls, "maybe there's a good reason."
"There better be," I whisper, wrapping my arms around myself.
A few moments pass and my dad steps inside, his face beat red. "She's staying in town for a couple of days." He pauses, "I don't want you anywhere near her, okay? You're in a good place."
I nod, "trust me. You don't have to worry about that. I don't want to be anywhere near her."
My dad grins quickly before stepping aside both Jack and I, and making his way into his room. Where I know he'll be spending the rest of the night.
"Are you sure you don't want to see her?" Jack asks.
I glance at him, "she made how she felt clear when she left me the first time. No need to re-open old wounds."
"But—"
"I'm not gonna see her, Jack. Drop it."
I look outside and see my mom backing out of the driveway. Somehow it feels like she's leaving me all over again.
