x || chapter seventeen

         Lucky for us, we made it out alive. My father had taken the bait about the schools late start, and at the first sign of freedom, we bolted. I knew the mess we had left was going to rise some questions for me when we got home, but I had no intentions of worrying about that now.

Buds diner was popular in Texas. It was small, but everything about it was large. The owner died three years ago, leaving the diner in his son's hands. He was a year older than me, and had attended the same school as I.

He was really pleasing to the eyes.

"What drinks can I get for y'all today?" A waitress asks the four of us only seconds after we find a booth.

"I think a water would be nice," I say, and the rest of the group nods.

I place my head in my hands and groan, "last night was a mistake!"

"Maybe for you," Kale laughs. "You were a little party girl. I don't think I've ever seen that side of you before, Lucia."

"Yeah, well, don't get used to it." I comment, "maybe if we're lucky Maya, we'll get to see Buddy."

"Oh, Bud's son? The one with the muscles and the smile, gosh!" Maya shrieks, "that mans smile can make my panties magically disappear."

Kale frowns, and out of spite, he starts up a heated conversation with Jack about girls. I once again glance at Jack as he listens to Kale with a smile on his face.

"Here are your waters," a male voice says, dropping four waters down on to the table. Both Maya and I gasp when we look up and see Buddy, his hair longer and a slight hint of a 5 o' clock shadow on his chin.

"What happened to our waitress?" Jack asks.

"I took over," he smiles at me. "Now, what can I get for y'all?"

As we give him our orders, Buddy's eyes lock with mine many times. His smile is somewhat hypnotic, and by the tightness of his black shirt, if you look just right, you can see subtle hints of those muscles that Maya was talking about.

"Perfect, I'll get those made and back to you in a moment." Buddy says, walking off.

"Geez Lu, do you want to take a picture?" Maya laughs.

I snap out of my moment and smile, "shut up!"
