x || chapter sixteen

         The light filtering through the window does little to wake me, but the warm body next to me causes a stir of panic to rise in my stomach, and it forces me from my slumber. From what I can make out, the figure next to me is male and has a good sense of what a gym is. But from my point of view, I can't see his face, leaving little to recognition.

Successfully, I slide out of the bed. My movements only cause the figure to mumble and move closer to the wall.

I slip on a robe and make my way down the stairs. Both Maya and Kale are tangled in each other's arms, a small blanket doing little to cover their semi-naked bodies. I check the living room clock and realize we're all at least three hours for school.

I tap Maya on the shoulder and she jolts up, the blanket falling off in the process.

"One, you and Kale are naked on my couch, and two, who's the guy in my bed?"

She's wide awake now, both her and Kale. Maya's yet to answer my question as she stumbles to get dressed, and I try my best to allow her to finish before I bombard her with questions.

As she finishes, I pull Kale away by the arm. He smiles, "the boy in your room is Jack. And I don't know if you did anything with him last night. It seems like you wouldn't either."

I'm at lack of words for this situation, and the growing head ache from my immature reckless drinking last night doesn't help. What if I did something with Jack last night?

What if I finally lost my virginity and now I can't remember? Did it hurt? Was I good? Did he like it?

"Why don't you just ask him?" Maya filters through the thoughts, fully dressed.

I shake my head, "I can't—not happening."

"Oh, look who's awake!" Kale announces as he pours himself a glass of orange juice, immediately handing it off to a pale Jack.

We lock eyes and I can feel my cheeks turn red. We stay like this for a good thirty seconds before Maya interjects.

"Since we are already late for school, you guys wanna play hookey and head to Bud's diner for some breakfast?"

I nod, "let me get dressed."

Jacks eyes follow me up the stairs until I disappear into my room. I quickly pull on some loose jeans and a regular white shirt. I quickly tie the laces to my converse and throw on a light grey cardigan.

I take a deep breathe before stepping out and meeting them downstairs. Maya takes my hand and we step outside, the three of us instantly stopping in our tracks at the sight of my dads car.

"Shit," I groan. This is exactly what I needed today, on top of everything.

Jack and I exchange a look, and the four of us get ready to tell the biggest lie of our lives.
