Ellis' POV
I grabbed a PB&J and some fruit. Before I could grab a water bottle, someone cut in front of me.
“Excuse me.” He turned to me and smirked. “You’re excused.” Brian. I took a deep breath and waited
for him to get his drink. He grabbed me a water as well as his drink. I raised my eyebrows at him and he
shrugged. “Walk with me.” We started walking towards my usual table and he asked, “Did you almost
drown yesterday?” I stared at him. “Did Steele tell you that?” He nodded. I shook my head. “No I didn’t
almost drown. He just pulled me out of the current.” Brian looked at me like he knew I was lying.
“Really? Cause I don’t think you do CPR on someone who’s alive.” I ducked my head. “Okay yeah. It
was bad. Why do you care anyway?” He stopped in front of me and turned around. I halted quickly at
his unexpected stop. He looked at me like I was crazy. “Are you serious?” I looked at him confused. He
took a step closer. “Are you stupid or something? If I remember correctly, we used to be best friends.
Then you started going out with Hill and hanging with his friends. I still care about you Ellis. That will
never change. I’ve made mistakes but I sure hope you haven’t thrown away the idea of our friendship
just yet, because of them.” I looked at him, unable to speak. He stepped even closer. “So next time you
ask, why do you care? It’s because I still care about you. Our friendship. I want to get that back. Is that
too much to ask?” He seemed dead serious, not like he was jokingly wanting to be friends again. He
was right of course. We used to be best friends until I started hanging out with Hill. Hill was the one that
told me that Brian got wasted every weekend. Now, I was starting to doubt that.
Brian stared at me a second longer before nodding. “Okay. I’m going to go with my friends, your old
ones, and let you think about what I just said. I made mistakes, as in the past. I try not to make those
kinds of mistakes any more. But I’ll let you decide whom to believe. My word or your boyfriend’s.” He
looked into my eyes before turning and heading to his table. Steele, who was already seated, looked at
me from across the room. His eyes cut into me and if he hadn’t been sitting so far away, I would have
thought he had heard every word. I sat down, across from Cara and looked at my food. I looked up to
see Reese, Daniel and Car all staring at me. From their expressions, they had heard every word.
Reese was the first to speak. “Steele had to do CPR?! Are you freaking crazy? Why would you not say
anything?” she whisper-yelled. I looked at her pleadingly. “I’m fine. Please you guys,” I looked at all of
them, “don’t tell Hill. He doesn’t need to know.” One by one, each of them nodded. I breathed a sigh of
relief and someone sat down next to me. It was Hill. He smiled at us and began to eat his lunch. I
glanced at Brian’s table to see him staring at me. Uncomfortable, I grabbed my water and looked away.
