Steele's POV
I watched as Ellis walked off. I knew she was angry with me. I didn’t want to make her hate me but I had
to convince her that I wasn’t the good guy. In fact, I would go to the ends of the earth for her not to hate
me. I looked back at her usual table to see Hill staring at me. I threw him a sarcastic smile and sat down
at my table.
After school, I readjusted my board and climbed into my car. The weather was great, so today was
going to be an awesome day to surf. I blasted the radio as I headed down to the beach, where, Cara
and Reese had already arrived. Ellis pulled in a minute later and didn’t look at me as she got out of her
jeep. She got into her car to change, then walked back over a minute later, bathing suit on and
board in hand. I couldn’t help but admire her athletic figure. I practically stared as she pulled on her surf
shirt and turned towards her friends. “Ready?” They smiled at her and we all waded into the water. It
was the perfect temperature and the waves were just right.
I couldn’t help but stare in awe every time Ellis caught a wave. Of course, I tried not to show that I was
impressed, but I definitely was. She was a born surfer and it was evident. Whenever she came up out of
the water, she’d try in vain to put her hair up but another wave would come too soon. That was okay
though; I liked her hair down. When the water calmed down a little, her hair would fall down in a messy
tangle, giving her a wild gypsy-ish kind of look. I knew I shouldn’t have been thinking about her the way
I did, but in those moments, I didn’t care.
We came out of the water victoriously. The waves were some of the best I’d seen and I’m sure the girls
would have said the same. Ellis started to dry off when she got a text. She looked down at her phone
and smiled. When she looked up at me, it was like nothing had been weird between us. “Looks like I’ll
be joining you guys for dinner.” I stared at her for a second before answering. “Not just Hill and me. I
invited Brian over. Hope that’s okay princess.” I threw her a grin and hopped into my car. I looked into
the rearview mirror as I pulled off of the beach and saw a hint of a smile on her face.
Three hours later, Brian and I were playing Madden on the xbox when the door to the basement
opened and someone walked down the stairs. I paused the game and looked up to see Ellis walk in. If I
hadn’t have paused the game, Brian would have scored a touchdown on me in a heartbeat. I couldn’t
look away from Ellis. She’d left her hair slightly messy and wore a flowy white spaghetti strap dress and
brown sandals. I think girls call them gladiators? But the dress was what amazed me. She seemed to
have found a dress that suited her personality perfectly. It was pure, like her and also carefree and
flowy. It was simple and modest but also a little wild. Brian groaned. “Dude why did you pause the –“ he
turned and saw Ellis. His lips slowly parted and I could tell he was thinking the same thing I was. I
