Ellis' POV

After school, I grabbed my suit out of my car and changed quickly. When I got to the shore to surf,

Reese and Steele were already there. They chatted aimlessly and I grabbed my board. When I reached

them, I smiled. “Hey guys.” They smiled at me and I turned as I heard a car drive in. I waved to Cara as

she stepped out. I stopped waving when I saw several other people get out of her car. She looked at

me apologetically. Brian, Daniel, Henri and Sam all smiled at me. Brian’s was a little more smirk-y

though. I waved to them and tried not to look mad. First of all, Brian and I are not on good terms; he is

so freaking annoying. Second, I don’t even know Henri. She seems nice but we’ve never really talked.

She’s more with the “popular” crowd. I also don’t really know Sam; he’s more of the quiet type, but

hangs out with Brian and his group. Third, this was supposed to be our private area to surf. I didn’t want

a bunch of people I didn’t really know, surfing with my friends and me. But I said hi to them anyways

and they grabbed boards out of Cara’s car. Cara whispered, “Sorry, they asked if they could come and I

couldn’t say no.” I smiled at her. “I know Cara. It’s fine. We will just suck it up and surf.” We linked arms

and walked towards the water.

I took off my t-shirt and pulled on a surf shirt. I pulled off my shorts and grabbed my board. When I

turned around, Brian was standing there. “Holy crap… jeez, stalker much?” He gave me a fake

innocent look. “Sorry. Just wanted to say thanks for letting us surf with you.” I rolled my eyes. “It wasn’t

my decision. You would have stayed anyway. And I’m not the leader or anything.” He looked at me

skeptically. “Aren’t you though?” I shook my head. “What do you want?” He looked at me in shock. “I

just wanted to say thanks. Is that so hard to believe?” He put a hand over his heart. “That hurts. Truly.”

He smiled. “And I want us to be friends.” I laughed. “Be friends with the guy who called my boyfriend a

douche? Not interested.” He shook his head and actually looked serious. “You should trust me on that

one. He’s not a good guy.” I grinned. “Oh that is rich, coming from you. Getting wasted every weekend,

smoking, always getting in trouble… need I go on?” He smiled but there was no humor in his

expression. “I can assure you, Hill is not any better. And for that matter, neither are you.” I took a step

back. “What’s that supposed to mean?” He made a tcking noise. “Oh Ellis. Cheating on your boyfriend

with his brother in your mind is not something to be proud of. Alas, I fear we all make those mistakes a

couple of times in our lives.” And with that, he walked into the water, leaving me agape.

I stood there for another minute, before angrily grabbing my board and storming into the water after

Brian. He turned around after walking a couple feet, like he knew I was going to storm after him… which

I did. He crossed his arms and smiled as I waded towards him. I poked him in the chest. “You do not

know me or Hill, so you do not get to talk about either of us like you do. Also, I do not ‘cheat’ on Hill with

Steele, in my mind. I don’t know how you came up with that or why, but you should keep whatever

things you are thinking about to yourself. Got it?” He smiled at me. “I know Hill better than you think.

And maybe you don’t like Steele, but once you know what Hill’s done, you’ll switch brothers in a

second. Unless you want to switch over to me.” My jaw dropped. “Are you serious?” I punched his arm.

He raised an eyebrow and I felt something pull on my leg, which got yanked out from under me. I

realized, as I was falling into the water, that he had put his foot behind my leg to make me fall. Right

before I hit the water, Brian grabbed my arms and pulled me up. Inches away, he didn’t let go but stared

straight into my eyes. “I know Hill better than you do. Be careful.” He whispered. I didn’t say anything.

The fact that he, Brian, was telling me to be careful around my own boyfriend was ironic. A grunt came

from a couple feet over and I saw that Cara and Steele were staring. Brian let go of my arms and I

stepped back. Cara bit her lip and smiled awkwardly. Steele looked at Brian with a confusing

expression. He looked angry but slightly relieved. I had no idea if they heard what we were talking

about or not. I grabbed my board and waded out even further before sliding on and starting to swim

towards the waves, all the while thinking about what Brian said. What was he talking about and why

would he make something up? A minute later, the rest of the group had gotten on their boards and

swam out too. Cara pulled up next to me but didn’t say anything. I glanced at Steele and saw that he

was already staring at me. He looked away and began to swim towards a great wave that was coming

up.

We surfed for another hour before heading to the shore. I grabbed my towel and begin to dry myself off.

Cara, and those she brought with her, headed to her car. Before Brian got into her car, he threw me a

cheeky wink. I rolled my eyes and saw that Steele was staring at him. I guess he didn’t like that Brian

was ‘flirting’ with me, since I’m dating his older brother. I said goodbye to Reese and Steele and

climbed into my jeep. I started it up but before I could drive, my phone dinged. I looked at the screen

and saw that I had gotten a message from Hill.

Wanna go on a date tonight?

I smiled and answered yes. I pulled off of the beach and got back onto the road. As soon as I reached a

red light, my phone dinged again. The new text was from Hill again. It said:

I really want to go on a date, just you and me, but my mom just told me that I need to stay home with Steele since he’s sort of new. I hate that she thinks he needs a babysitter but she’s sort of right. Do you just want to come over here and we can eat dinner?

I thought about that for a minute. Hill told me to be careful with Steele and Brian told me to be careful

with Hill. Well I’m not going to avoid them because of how someone else thinks they are. I trust my

boyfriend and I’m going to eat dinner with him. I texted him ‘yes’ again, and he sent me a text saying

thank you.
