The substitute

Chapter 1

"Zoe! Come on you're going to be late for your internship."

"I'm coming mother!"I yell. I can not believe it, it's my last year of high school and I have an internship! Most students in my school think I'm weird, but I don't care. I have worked way too hard to get this internship. Being a teacher is my dream job and I'm finally going to be one today!...Well a student teacher. So the first week I basically have to examine the class and watch the teacher teach the class while I take notes. I found out that I'm teaching 2nd grade. I just hope the kids like me and don't think I'm a freak.

I finally get dressed and I get into my mother's car. Every time I'm in her car it reminds me how I need to get a car I'll just make a note about that.

"Remember this is your first internship don't mess this up!" My mother starts to ramble on how I should and should not act, I just nod my head cause I have heard this lecture a thousand times.

My mother finally drops me off from school. I quickly run inside once I enter the school I get trampled by Nate. "Hey Zoe." He kisses me on the nose. "Hey Nate, I missed you."

"I missed you more." He tells me as he pushes a strand of hair behind my ear. "So when are you going to your internship?" He asks me excitedly. "I'm staying for the first two periods then I'm leaving." I tell him equally excited. "Well do you want me to drive you?"

"No I'm fine, I'm just going to walk, I mean it's only two blocks away anyway." I mean I don't want to hurt his feelings by saying no, but I also don't want to depend on him all the time, like I love him so much but he isn't my babysitter.

"Oh" he says, while looking down on the floor.

"I'm sorry I just don't want to depend on you with everything. I wanna know that I can do this on my own, but that doesn't mean I will not need you any less, I love you so much and there's going to be a hundred things I'm going to need from you." I'm thanked when I get a smile from his perfect face, "Ok." He says still smiling, "I love you." He says, "and I love you."

We go to our first two period classes, at the end of second period I leave. Once I leave school and walk to the elementary school which I think it's called OakvilIe Elementary School, I start to feel nervous, scared and a little excited. I think I'm being

intimidated by 2nd grade students.

As I walk my thoughts have been disrupted by a black BMW with really loud rock music playing in the car making the whole street shake. I watch the car as it turns at the end of the street making the street quiet again.

I force myself to stop thinking of the BMW once I enter the school.

I walk into the classroom and see 22 kids sitting on their tiny desks and a teacher standing in front of the classroom and it looks like she's pregnant. "Oh your finally here! You must be Zoey Archer, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Mrs.Smith" she says excitedly and hugs me. I automatically like her. "Hi! It's great to finally meet you too!" I say equally excited. "Ok so today we're basically going to do some 'Get to know each other' exercises and what we do is we have to tell your full name, your favorite color, and what do you want to be when you grow up." She tells me and I nod my head.

"Would you like to sit down?"she asks politely, I nod my head and take a seat on a chair next to mrs.Smith's desk and watch how she gets ahold of the class. "Ok everybody let's sit in a circle" she says to the children,she gestures at me to come and I sit next to Mrs.Smith on a chair. "Okay kids say hi to Ms.Archer" she says "HI MS.ARCHER" all of the kids say loudly and slowly in sync. "She's going to be my sidekick just in case you guys get to crazy for me to handle!" She says in a nice way making all the kids giggle and making the boys shake their heads and pretend they're crazy which makes the children laugh harder. It's so cute how the simplest things makes the children laugh I smile at them while they are all in hysterics.

"Okay okay everyone quiet" she says politely. And all the kids try to stop laughing by covering their mouths with their tiny hands. "We're going to play a game today!" She says excitedly "YAYYY" all the kids say putting their hands in the air. "We're going to go in a circle and you have to say your name, favorite color, and what do you want to be when you grow up." All the kids say their name, favorite color, and what they want to be when they grow up and some of the boys say they want to be a tree or a lion when they grow up making the class laugh, so once it's my turn I decide to play along. "My name is Zoey Archer, my favourite color is blue and green and" I'm cut off by a girl I assume her name is Alexis "YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE FAVOURITE COLOR" "okay... My favourite color is blue" I say. "And I want to be a tree when I grow up" the class is silent and I have a stupid smile on my face Mrs.Smith gives me a sympathetic smile wow that was embarrassing.

"Okay everybody lunch time!" She breaks the silence when the class goes empty leaving only me and Mrs.smith."Don't worry they forget everything after lunch" she assures me and I'm glad she doesn't push it further.

"Oh congratulations on the pregnancy" I tell her with a smile "oh I'm not pregnant" she laughs. Oh no I'm so stupid I can't believe I said that! "Oh my god I'm so sorry" I say frantically. She starts to laugh

what? Why is she laughing?"I'm just kidding honey" she tells me. I let out a breath of relief and laugh nervously.

Wow this is harder than I thought.
