Alexandra's POV

The next morning, I filled myself a bowl of cereal and headed towards the table. My foot caught on something as I sat down, and I looked under the table. Sitting in all its beat-up glory, was Jake's skateboard. It looked like he had rushed off and forgot it.
I picked it up and examined it. The board was covered in a rough black material that was ripped in many places. I flipped it over to find that the whole bottom side was covered in doodles and notes written in permanent marker.
Hey Jake! How's summer so far? It stinks having to be so far away but—
I immediately stopped reading the notes. Reading them made me feel like I was invading on his privacy.
After I finished my breakfast, and ran upstairs and took a quick shower. I pulled on a pair of boot-cut jeans because I don't particularly like wearing shorts to school. My shirt was royal blue with black music notes on it. I picked up my comb and forced it through my ratty hair, leaving it soft and smooth.
My book bag was waiting on the ground for me, and I slung it over my shoulder and walked into the kitchen. Josh was sitting on the table and eyeing the skateboard.
"Josh! Get off!" I exclaimed. Josh hopped off and picked up the skateboard.
"Hey sis," he said slowly. "Isn't this that boy's skateboawd? The one that wan off and Vewonica texted to come back? Why is it here?"
I gave him my best glare. "Stop talking like a baby Josh. And yes, that is his. I'm going to give it back to him today."
Josh stuck his tongue out at me, and I snatched to board out of his grip. He raced out of the room, and I continued on my way out the door, this time holding the skateboard.
At school, I shoved my school books into my already cluttered locker. I decided that I would give Jake his board at lunch, but I would tell him before because he was in my first class. Somehow, I got the board in my locker and I headed to my first class. I sat down in the desk that I sat in yesterday, and looked around to find Jake. When I didn't find him, I turned to John who sat two desks behind me.
    "Hey John!" I said brightly.
"Oh!" He looked startled. "Good morning Alexand—" I cut him off.
"You can call me Alex. Alexandra is a mouthful."
He laughed. "I guess you're right. I'm used to just having a four letter name."
I smiled. "So..." I started awkwardly. "Is Jake here? I don't see him."
"Oh," John said, looking surprised. "I didn't know you liked him that much already!" I felt my face growing red, thinking about what my overly-protective parents would think if they heard him. John laughed. "I'm just teasing you, you know. Why do you want to know?"
I was about to tell him that Jake had left his skateboard at my house and I was going to give it back, but then I would have to explain why Jake was at my house in the first place, and I realized that I really didn't want to go into that with John, or anyone else for that matter. I still didn't want to think about how my parents reacted to me having a boy at my house, even after explaining that we didn't harbor and feelings for each other.
"He is my guide, is he not?" I said simply.
"I guess you have a point there. Sorry about your luck, but you just happen to have a very unreliable guide, it's normal for him not to be at school."
I sighed and turned back around as our teacher started role call. What was with this kid?
