I was disoriented for a second and then I realized what happened. Jake had spread his angel wings out and wrapped them around me, I could feel them on my back. However that also meant another thing.
"Hey," Jake said, bending down to me and kissing my forehead, "Thank you for...whatever you did."
I looked up at him. The wings were huge and warm and soft and his body was warm against me and he had his arms around my waist and...and...[I'm sorry I forgot where I was going with that, I'll continue.]
"So, are they permanent?" I asked, finally breaking the silence.
"Let me check," He said and he folded the wings back to his back, "No they kind of melt into my back. But if I will them..." The wings spread out again and enveloped me once again.
"Can I get a pair of wings?" I asked automatically trying not to look up at his face inches above mine, "Because that'd be kind of cool."
"We could be a team," Jake suggested smiling.
I couldn't help but smile too, "A two person squad."
We laughed and it was impossible not to look up at his face. There was a certain glow to his hazel eyes. Almost...willing. Willing me to do something. I reached up and grabbed his shoulders then buried my face in his shirt.
"Do I get to call you 'angel' now?" I murmured against him.
"Yeah, totally," He said, like that was a given, "I get to call you...'River' like in Rivera."
I nodded happily and he kissed me on my cheek. There was a moment of complete bliss.
And then Sadie opened the door.
"Hey stop having sex an- OH MY GODS OF EGYPT!" She screamed, dropping her wand and staff on the floor.
"Sadie!" Me and Jake whispered at the same time, "Shhh!"
Sadie picked up her wand and staff and stared in awe at Jake's wings. They were cool, yeah, but not worth waking up the entire Nome for. People grew friggin' antlers in the 21st Nome if they made a big enough mistake.
"Carter!" Sadie called out, "You'd better come see this!"
So, naturally, not 2 minutes later the whole gang was in Jake's room and staring at the wings.
"How on earth..." Zia muttered as she looked at them, "I've seen people add or change parts of their body but never have I seen...wow."
"Did Dean do this?" Walt asked as Jake flapped them once. More things around the room scattered, "Because that's some crazy hard magic."
Jake didn't seem like he was considering Walt's question. He kept running his hand over his stomach like something was there before he said, "Carter, don't birds have, uh, backup lungs, almost?"
"Yeah, I think so," He said, "So they don't suffocate while they're flying."
"I think I might have one," Jake said, then he nodded, "Yeah, definitely have one
Reluctantly, I reached a hand out to where Jake's hand had been on his chest. Sadie looked at us like she was commanding us to kiss but I let it slide. I listened a bit then drew my hand back slowly.
"Whoa..." I muttered like I was a kid who'd seen a rocket ship, "It's like...an extra pair of lungs."
"Look," Carter said rubbing his eyes, "I hate to be that guy but can we look at this more tomorrow? Because I'm exhausted."
We nodded and everybody except me and Jake left the room. He sat cross leged on his bed and slowly pumped his wings back and forth before dispelling them and lying down. I awkwardly sat at the bottom of the bed until Jake gently grabbed my arms and pulled me up with him. He draped a blanket over us and wrapped me in his arms. I closed my eyes before wrapping my arms around his neck. I felt him nuzzle his head into the hollow of my neck and I rested my chin on his shoulder.
"You think these wings are unnatural?" Jake murmured, breaking the silence.
"I have no reason to," I said, "They are natural on you."
He nodded then kissed my neck, "I'm really lucky to have you."
"Yeah," I sighed, "You are."
