My Shadow

Perry's P.O.V

I ran faster, faster than I had ever done before. I wasn't running from wolves or bears but a monster. Not your everyday gross monster with slime oozing out of its ear but a monster that could drown you in all your fears, your worries and your enemies.

It was my shadow. The one that would never leave me alone. The one that would either be by my side through thick and thin or be creepily breathing down my neck. Ever since we came to this new world it was radio silence, not bothering me with snarky remarks like it use to or criticising my every move. I didn't think much of it either since there were better things to think about.

However, today Shadow had woken up. She had woken up and she was angry. Angry at this world, angry at Riley, angry at my friends and most of all angry at me. So I decided to do the best option to save my friends. Run. Just run. Run away from them, run away from a good life and run away from my only chance of survival. I knew it would never be easy to have loved ones, but I wanted to try. But the only life I'll ever be able to live is one filled with darkness. A life so cold it would freeze hell over. A life of isolation, away from the happiness of the world.

"I-I can't r-run anymore," I huffed exhausted. My legs wobbled and collapsed onto the dirt and leaves. I gasped for air. After running for five hours straight you would expect me to be dead, but to my impasse, I wasn't. At this point, I would've rather been dead than anything else, because I knew even if I fell asleep my nightmares would torture me more than reality. My mind was racing, what could I do? Where could I go? What will she do? 'Hello, little P,' A challenging voice echoed throughout the empty forest. I couldn't see her but I knew she was there. She was grinning at my foolishness, how my friends would hate me and how I was acting like my usual cowardly self. "Go...away!" I huffed out. My throat was burning, begging me for just a drop of water or any liquid that would soothe my cracked throat. 'Now, is that any way to talk to your sister?' Shadow retorted. "Who are you to call yourself my sister!" I screamed back at her, ignoring the protests from my voice. "You are just a shadow, shadows don't talk or mess with your head," I said logically, pointing towards my brain. 'If you did your research you would remember that shadows can represent: A doppelganger (a twin of another character)' She replied. "I do remember, and it also said that shadows are: A representation of something dark (as used in foreshadowing), foreboding, or evil," I snapped back.

I glared at the newly forming black dust that turned into a mirror image of me but with pitch black hair and glowing blue eyes, her outfit was the same as mine but opposite colours. Its aura was dark and sinister, something that was unknown for a while until now. "Ah, it feels so nice to finally become physical again," Shadow stretched. "What do you want? You were quiet until we found Riley," I ask sceptically. If I say one wrong word she'll either change the subject or twist my words. "Well, you guys seemed fine without me, but after the fish incident, I started to get restless. I was focusing more on your actions and what would happen. I mean you literally broke down when you were left alone like a baby!" She laughed. I clenched my fists and was about to retort when she spoke again. "I was about to say something and start teasing you, but then that guy appeared, what was his name? Rei? No... Ah, Ren! Yeah, I decided to watch how it would all turn out. And it was HYSTERICAL! I mean, how could Riley be so trustworthy of these creatures! It was the first time I actually saw you get angry, you even spoke your mind! I thought you were doing ok, so I made it even better and spoke up,".

"NO! You made everything worse! I lost the only people who actually liked me! Riley hates me, Jack loves Riley so there's no way he'd forgive me and Cole has known them even longer so I doubt he'll come after a stupid crush! You made everything so much worse," I exclaimed trying to hold back the tears that were already submerging. I wanted to punch something, I wanted to scream, I wanted to do so many things that I couldn't do. "How... pitiful" She spat out the word 'pitiful' as if it was poison. "Well, since it seems as if you couldn't even hold a friendship for a week, we're gonna start doing things my way" Shadow started to glow a dark blue ember. I could tell she was about to possess my body, but I was defenceless. I couldn't do anything. For the first time, I actually understood what she meant.

I was so pitiful, I wasn't even capable of keeping a friendship for a week. I couldn't do anything to help our makeshift team! She was only taking control because she couldn't bare to see my power be used by such a worthless person. I was starting to question why they even kept me around. Maybe out of pity? I didn't understand!

Just as Shadow started to possess me, I sensed the presence of someone familiar. No, someone who should be dead. "Need some help?" I heard that same mysterious but trusting voice again. I looked up and my surroundings had changed. Instead of the gloomy dark forest, I was once laying in, it was a large white room with nothing in it. Before I stood the fallen angel himself. "R-ren?" I ask. "Looks like your in trouble...again," He responded. "Heh, I guess," I say quietly. "Perry," He says to me looking me straight in the eyes. "Do you like playing the useless, defenceless, shy girl?".

"..." I stayed silent. Was I acting? I don't have any useful power like Jack and I could never raise my voice to someone. But I just did, a few hours ago. Am I truly shy or do I just lack confidence? They're basically the same thing but... I don't understand. Why is he asking me a question like this? Who wants to be defenceless? Who wants to be useless? Who wants to be shy? "Who wants that?" I asked in less than a whisper. "Hmm?" he asks as if he couldn't hear me, but I knew he could. "I said... WHO WANTS TO BE LIKE THAT? WHY? WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO BE LIKE THAT?" I nearly screamed. Am I really acting?

I collapsed to my knees and looked down at the floor. I couldn't understand. My mind was a mess. Hell, my life was a mess. I never made a single friend on Earth and then the first time I actually do I blow it! I even have a split personality disorder! How effed up is that! Ren lifted my chin and I looked up into his dead grey eyes. They showed no sign of life but a lot of sorrow. "Perry, you're stronger than you think. You have powers stronger than Shadow. You can beat her. You have to believe," he stated. "Please, can you help me?" I asked. He looked at me confused by the question. "Please, can you be my mentor?" I repeat giving him a hand to shake. "Yes," he says shaking my hand.

And just like that, I was back in reality. Shadow already sucking up my soul. I stood up and stared her dead in the eye. I gave her the coldest glare I could muster and she looked taken back. My stare was so intense she started to freeze. "W-What are you doing to me?" Shadow questioned looking at her legs and hands. "What are you talking about?" Ren asked looking shadow in the eye. "Y-You can't f-freeze people! Can't y-you?" she said shaking. Her feet and body stopped moving, but there was nothing around them! "No...NO! NOOOOOOOOoooooo-" Her scream was caught off as she stood frozen still. "W-What happened?" I asked running over to her and examining her. If Shadow had ever had a pulse, she wouldn't anymore. She was so cold. "I think your glare was so cold, it made her mind think she was being frozen. So then her body went into a state that would if she was frozen," Ren replied sceptically. "So she's...". "Dead,". "...oh,"
