CHAPTER SIX: how about a pulse?

"Do you wanna be my partner?"
Shelly glanced up, her eyes giving away into apprehensiveness and my palms sweat nervously at the thought of rejection.
I had to do this. She needed to say yes in order for me to finally start helping Abby. There was no other way.
Her teeth release her bottom lip, still looking unsure. "Why? You don't wanna be labeled as the dead girl's best friend-what friend too?" She asks.
"Yeah well..." I mutter with a sad grin, pulling the chair out besides her and sitting, a hand coming up to my chin. "I'm the freak who sees the dead."
Her lips purse slightly, nodding along as if she understood. "It's funny how everyone turns on someone so quick," she snaps her fingers. "I had a break down and took it out on everybody. Now I'm labeled as unstable and crazy." Shelly says turning.
"Well fuck them."
She seems taken back by my sudden profanity and to be honest so was I. I never really cursed unless I was stressed or something but for some reason the thought of Shelly being bullied made me angry.
She was one of the few good ones like Abigail.
"We can can be outcasts together." I say.
She smiles softly at my stuck out hand, wrapping her fingers around mine after a moment, shaking and nodding along. "I'd like that." She breathes out and for a beat we just smile at each other, happy to have a new friend.
"Now-" Shelly starts after a moment, propping her foot up on the bar besides the desk, grabbing her journal. "I was thinking that we could divide the project into two?"
The whole period we talked and worked things out. She said she would come over and work on it with me today since it was due in two days; even saying she would just walk home with me.
I guess in retrospect it seemed a hell of a lot easier but now here I was: walking home with Shelly and acting like a total nervous freak!
Our shoes making an awkward scrape against the concrete every few steps and I desperately tried to hurry home. At least there I knew we wouldn't be in silence.
We had just rounded the corner to my house when Shelly suddenly spoke up, her voice was quiet, so quiet that I almost didn't pick up on it. "Can you really see dead people?"
I tensed for a moment before relaxing, figuring it was fine. "Um yeah..."
She nodded and relief hit me in waves at the sight of my front door.
"Have you ever seen Abigail?"
I almost choked on my spit at the question and thankfully the door had opened to my mom, leaving her question unanswered for now at least.
"Oh hello!" She greeted with a wide grin and I blushed.
"Yeah um mom Shelly's my partner for biology and we have a project due in like two days so..."
