CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: shiny pistol

-
Finn

My voice was shaky and quiet as I whispered the command out. "Everyone stay silent but, we have to move to the back of the attic." I held Millie tighter against me, her frame trembling as fat tears threatened to leak her eyes.

Nobody moved and I swore for a moment nobody had breathed as well. Just stood deathly still as noise rattled from down stairs below.

My lip quivered, smacking lightly as I gulped talking again. "Guys..." I cried softly and finally they slowly turned back; each having a different sort of look.

Gaten's eyes were wide as he kept fidgeting with his fingers.

Caleb's were dark and he tried his best to keep a blank strong facade but it was slowly slipping.

Noah's-oh. His eyes were filled with pure terror no doubt about that especially, by his heaving chest.

And maddie was full on crying already. I could see the hopeless look in her blue orbs and my heart strings tugged.

"...we have to move back and hide. It's the best chance. J-just be extremely quiet."

They nodded gently, afraid if they moved even and ounce too much it'd be over.

Slowly, we all started walking backwards. I hissed when I accidentally stepped on a creaky piece of wood and flinched, making them all freeze when the noise from downstairs stopped.

My breath escaped harshly, panting almost against my lips as I held Ava's hand tightly. She looked up at me with a fear filled look, her bottom lip puckering out and I could see her eyes watering.

"Are you going to keep us safe?" Ava asks through tears and tried my best to smile. Wiping her tears away quickly and nodding before kissing her forehead.

After the noise returned from below we started our slow tread to the back of the attic; there we can hide better rather, than being right in the front.

My feet were cautious this time of the old wood beneath my feet and so was everyone else.

We were so close when suddenly there was a rattling from the entrance. All eyes met others as we held our breaths.

I begged god, to all the heavens that the latch didn't open or that he gave up on looking up here. It rattled and rattled for what seemed like eternity.

Then abruptly it stopped.

Our breathing seemed to ease at that and I saw Maddie smile happily for the first time today but, it seemed to vanish almost as fast as it appeared when a bang went off and her mouth opened in a startled scream.

All eyes turned to her and big fat tears leaked definitely now as, she knew she had definitely ruined our chances of being safe.

The latch swung open and there was no point in being quiet now.

Everyone ran and spread out anywhere we could. Under boxes hidden in the depth of corners.
