CHAPTER TEN: she felt like heaven to me

I stared up at the house.

The cold harsh wooden shelter of a home.

Despite there being no ghosts, at least that I could see around, I felt a chill run its way up my back, leaving a trail of goosebumps in its wake.

But I pushed that all aside and rang the door bell. The button had a faded yellow color shining through it dimly as well a crack in the middle, that I was surprised I hadn't cut myself on.

The door swung open after a moment, "Oh, hello. Come in!" His voice was kind but his eyes-those eyes-held something I couldn't decipher.

I smiled and nodded awkwardly at the man. "Hello Mr. Modine," I greeted trying with all my might to forget everything and keep the fear and tremble out of my voice.

He didn't seem to notice luckily.

"What would you like for me to work on for my first day today?" I asked.

"Actually..." he started, "before we start I'd like to inform you that my son is coming either this week or next week so I'll only need you part time."

"That's fine," I said but I was screaming inside. How was I supposed to get my intel now?

Mr. Modine smiled before instructing me all the chores to do and that was that. He watched me the whole time, saying it was necessary for my first day.

He never left once and by the end of my "shift" I had left with nothing new. Just some sun burn from cutting the grass outside.

Mr. Modine bid me a farewell with a "good job" before ushering me out to leave.

What a bust.

I hadn't learned shit. Sighing, I continued my biking back home. I had been so wrapped up in my thoughts I hadn't even realized there was a girl standing on my porch waiting.

"Um hello?"

She wiped around with a smile. "Hi!"

There was a beat of awkward silence, my hand scratching behind my neck nervously. "Not be to rude or anything but who are you and why are you here?"

She flipped her blown hair behind her shoulder and stuck her hand out, her blue eyes boring into mine. "I'm Natalia and I came to talk."

"Talk about what?" I let go of her hand.

"Well I've heard about you..."

"Oh shit what'd you hear?"

She laughed shaking her head. "Nothing bad just that you have a special ability so to speak," she spoke.

"Yeah... I guess?"

"I know you can see dead people and well I'm part of a club I guess you can say and I think you'd make a great addition to it."

"A club?" I asked and I couldn't help but let my skepticism seep into my tone.

"A club," Natalia justified. "You're not alone. There are others who are like you with special abilities. So if you're available in a bit I think it'd be great if you came." I studied her intently. Her blue eyes seemed to be kind and honest and full of pure genuine interest.
