Eleanor’s POV
I woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside. What a typical morning, I thought as I groaned, pulling the covers down and dragging my feet across the floor and down the stairs.
“Morning, El!” Mum said, as she looked up from her mail. I mumbled a greeting and plopped down onto my seat.
My mother removed her reading glasses, set down her mail and brushed her golden brown hair out of her face, revealing bright brown glowing eyes identical to mine. Her body sank as she sighed and frowned. I swallowed and gulped as she took my hands and said gently, “Eleanor, is something bothering you?”
My bottom lip quivered as I shook my head, holding back tears. Mum sighed again and said with the same soft gentle voice as before, “I heard you crying last night, El.” I was on the verge of tears, still shaking my head.
“You know, you can tell me anything.”
I let out a huge wail and started sobbing as Mum wrapped her arms around me and rubbed my back.
“There, there,” she said, soothingly. I squeezed her back tightly, holding on for dear life.
“Shhh, shhh, it’s okay, cupcake,” Mum stroke my hair as if it was a delicate cat’s fur. I loved when she did this and when she called me cupcake. It was the nickname she’d always call me since I was a little girl, obsessed with cupcakes.
Then reality hit me.
I pulled back slowly and sniffled, wiping away any excess tears.
Why should I be crying over something as silly as this? Louis and I weren’t ever anything – ever. I mean, it’s not his fault he has a girlfriend. Heck, I’d be surprised if he didn’t.
“Eleanor?” My mother snapped me out of my thoughts.
“Eleanor?”, she repeated. I shook my head.
“No, it’s fine. Um… thanks… I’m gonna be late.” I dashed upstairs and into the bathroom, slamming the door behind me. My spine came into contact with the back of the door, sliding down and down until I was sitting on the floor. My knees bent up and I buried myself in them, crying my eyes out.
After a good few minutes, I stood up, wiped my tears away and started to pull myself together to get ready for school.
I applied my makeup carefully today. Usually I would go for a natural look, but I decided that it was going to be bold today. I drew a winged line on my eyelid with my eyeliner and then proceeded to curl my lashes, applying many coats of mascara after. I opened my lipstick drawer, running my finger along each container. The one that I went with was called “Kiss Me”, a bright bold red colour. Perfect.
No more innocent Eleanor. I took out my curling iron and wrapped my delicate hair around it, making sure it was flawless. After a few sprays of hairspray, I was done.
I walked back into my room and chose my outfit for the day: a ruffled light pink tank top and a pair of white shorts. I slid the top over my head and zipped up the pair of shorts. Walking towards my shoe shelf, I looked down and saw a pair of shoes that was waiting for me. A pair of gold Jimmy Choos that my mother got me for getting straight A*s for all my subjects. Every single one. I hardly wore them because they would hurt my feet after a while but I decided that today was the day.
Slipping my soles into the heels, I grabbed my sunglasses on the way. I stared at my reflection in the mirror. Woah. Who is this girl? But, then again, that’s the reaction I want from people.
Smirking at myself, I slid the sunglasses from my head onto the rim of my nose, grabbed my bag and walked down the stairs and out the door.
“Bye, Mum!” I called. I swear I saw my mum’s jaw drop as I walked past her.
The bus pulled up onto my street and the door swung open. I dragged my feet up the stairs.
Gasps surrounded me as well as many voices whispering “Who is that?”.
I held my head up high, pushed my shoulders back and strutted down the aisle, as if I was a model. When I got to Danielle, I took my seat.
“Woah, Eleanor… I… I don’t know what to say,” Danielle stuttered. I smiled.
“What happened to you?” She asked me.
“What do you mean?” I asked sweetly, playing dumb.
“You’re just so… different. I’m just curious. What brought on this change?”
I sighed. “Promise me, you won’t tell anyone?” Danielle stuck out her pinky and my own pinky hooked onto it, smiling as it did. Remember in primary school how uncomplicated things were?
“When Liam and I were studying yesterday, he told me that Louis has a girlfriend,” I explained. It seems silly, but I was still fighting back the tears in my eyes.
Danielle’s face softened as she spoke. “Oh, Eleanor, I’m so sorry!”
“It’s fine, really,” I said, even though it was just a big fat lie.
“Gosh. Why can’t he love you? I really thought he did. I mean, how cool would it be? Both of us, best friends dating them, best friends? Ugh,” Danielle groaned.
The bus came to a halt and we got off.
Perrie was waiting for us. “Hey girls,” she chirped. We both greeted her and Perrie’s face fell as she realised I looked different.
“El… um…” She stuttered just like Dani did.
Speaking of which, Dani, such a life saver, explained to Perrie what happened.
“Oh, gosh, El! I didn’t know you liked him that much! And I swear, I didn’t know they were still together! I thought they broke up!” Perrie gushed.
“It’s okay. It’s actually okay. It’s not like I blame you or anything,” I let out a breath or a chuckle. I’m not even sure what it was but all I know is I made an embarrassing sound.
The two girls stared at me in sympathy.
“Let’s just get to class,” I half-pleaded, half-demanded.
I marched straight into the halls of the school, Dani and Perrie scurrying quickly behind me, trying to keep up. I didn’t bother making any eye contact with anyone. I started to pick up the pace, almost running in the halls.
“Wait Eleanor!” Dani called.
“Slow down!” Perrie shouted.
I ignored them as I kept running running running until I bumped into someone, causing me to fall on my butt and onto the floor.
“Sorry,” I mumbled.
Then I heard an all too familiar voice; one that I prayed not to hear at all today.
“E-Eleanor?”
