Part 7 - Break Up

I stood in front of the club Veronica and I had first met at, with her hand in mine.

It seems like the first time we met was forever ago but it was really only a couple weeks ago. I never would've thought I'd be dating her, I mean fake dating.

"Ready?" She whispered in my ear, interrupting my thoughts.

"Yup" I replied.

We entered the club and my heartbeat immediately matched the rhythm of the pounding bass in the music.

"It's busy tonight" Veronica shouted over the music.

"Yeah!" I shouted back.

"Lets dance!" She said.

I let myself fall into the music, not really caring about my surroundings. Veronica put her arms around my neck as we both jumped and danced around.

"I'll be right back, I'm going to get us some drinks" I said.

Veronica nodded as she continued dancing.

As I made it to the bar I looked down and noticed I had an incoming call from...

Archie

I picked up the phone and pressed "Answer"

"What do you want, Archie?"

"I-i don't know we just haven't talked in a while. I wanted to catch up?" He replied.

"Okay well I'm kind of at the club right now"

"Do you want to come to my place when you're done?"

I smiled to myself.

"Um sure I guess" I answered.

"Okay, see you then."

I hung up.

"Who was that?" A familiar voice asked from behind me.

"It was Archie! He invited me over!" I said enthusiastically.

"Oh, yay" Veronica replied with a sad smile.

"What? That's a good thing our plan worked!"

"Yeah, I just didn't expect it to work so fast" She shrugged.

"Yeah well, I'm going to head over there. I had fun tonight though, lets do it again sometime soon?"

Veronica stared at me with a confused expression.

"Betty I can't be your friend, you know that"

"What? What the hell are you talking about? We're best friends."

"Not if we're breaking up, everyone will know it was an act" she shook her head.

"V... I don't want to lose you" I said.

"It's me or Archie" she frowned.

There was a moment of silence.

"I'm sorry V" I said as I left the club.

I don't understand why this has to affect our friendship, couples break up and stay friends all the time?

I drive to Archie's, I was happy that our plan worked, but I'm upset it meant losing Veronica in the process.

I rung the doorbell.

"Hey, come on in" Archie said appearing in the doorway.

I stepped into his house for the first time in what felt like forever.

"It's been a while" I chuckled.

"Yeah" Archie laughed as he sat down on the couch. I sat down next to him.

"I wasn't expecting you to get here so quickly" He said.

"Yeah... well I was with Veronica but we got into a fight, and um yeah we're over"

"Oh, I'm sorry" he said sympathetically.

"Yeah, thanks" I nodded

"Well, I'm glad you want to be friends again" Archie said.

Friends?

"Wait, friends?" I questioned.

"Yeah..." he said awkwardly.

"I thought you asked me here because you wanted to get back together?"

"No, I uh am into someone else" He said nervously.

"Oh, of course you are. I have to go" I said and ran out of the house.

Of course he just wanted to be friends, that's so typical.

Tears started to pour out of my eyes.

I just lost the two most important people in my life, in one night.

* The Next Day *

"I thought you'd be waking the halls with Archie by now" Veronica mumbled as she passed by me in the hall.

I rolled my eyes.

"Hey Betty, I heard about the breakup. Are you alright?" Kevin asked appearing by my side.

"Not really honestly" I sighed.

"Well, it's Veronica's loss. You, me, and Val can have a sleepover tonight and eat shit tons of icecream" He announced.

"Sounds like a plan" I chuckled.

"Alright, I'm gonna head to class. See ya later"

"Bye"

As I walked down the hall to my class, my eyes met Archie's. I looked away as quickly as possible, but I noticed he was trying to catch up to me.

"Betty, wait!" He called out.

I tried to keep walking, but he caught up to me. Stupid football players.

"What?" I asked annoyed.

"Can we talk? About last night" He asked.

"There's nothing to talk about Arch, I misinterpreted things. No big deal" I shrugged.

"So we're good?" He questioned with a confused look.

"No of course not. You're still an asshole" I said, walking away from him.

"What?! Betty" he called after me but I had already made it into the classroom.

I just want this day to be over, everything has gotten so messy.
