"One. . . Two. . . Three. . . Four."

Something hard pressed down on my chest and soon air was filling my lungs.

"Don't you dare go out on me kid," a voice snapped above me.

I couldn't move and I was beginning to lose feeling in my legs and the darkness was beginning to cave in on me.

Yet the voice continued to chant.

Above me I could see a white light begin to form.

Am I dying? I thought to myself as the light began to make it's way towards me and the counting began to fade away.

My body, which at first felt cold began to warm as the light moved closer, and I felt myself smile at the pleasant idea that death wasn't so bad, that any moment now the pain I was feeling all over would soon just drift away.

The thought was soothing and as the light came closer the more I seemed to relax.

But just as quickly as the light came so did the other voice.

Don't be stupid Rogue you know you don't want to die.

Did I?

The light was beginning to retreat and the first voice was coming back continuing to count.

The light soon disappeared all together leaving me in darkness.

With one last thump against my chest my eyes opened and I gasped before choking up salt water.

"Dammit Rogue."

I turned to see dad sitting with his knees bent behind him and an exhausted expression on his face.

His wiped the sweat from his brow and pulled me in for a hug.

"Don't ever scare me like that again." he said and he didn't let go until he made me promise.

In the back of my head though I couldn't help but feel like my chance of letting go was spent the minute the light drifted away.
