reagan had always wanted to be a big sister.
her friends at school all had little brothers and sisters, and whenever she went to their houses for playdates, she envied having a younger presence around to take care of and boss around. she begged and begged her mother and father, but they told her time and time again that it wouldn't be possible; reagan herself had already been a miracle.
she met dan, a small, pudgy boy with curly hair and dimples. he was shorter than her, and his voice still squeaked while hers didn't - but he was still older than her. nevertheless, she loved dan, because he was sweet and shy. he was submissive, which allowed her to boss him around and not have to worry about him fighting back. but it didn't have the same charm that she felt being a big sister would have.
finally, reagan's parents told her she was going to get a brother named phil, and she was ecstatic. he had to be younger than her, because her parents knew that she wanted to be a big sister. at least, she assumed they knew. she asked lots of questions, leaving out the age of this phil, until she mentioned him playing with junior, her friend sarah's baby brother. they sat reagan down and told her that phil was ten years old, and he would be her older brother. he would get his own room and lots of privacy because moving into a new home isn't the easiest thing in the world.
reagan lost it then and there.
she was bitter for weeks, but didn't talk to dan about it. his parents were in the midst of a divorce, and even at her young age, she knew that whining to dan about her problem wasn't a good thing to do. she knew things would work out for the both of them in the end.
what she didn't know, however, was that dan and phil were going to fall for each other, and turn her entire world over on its back. she felt bad for corey, she hated phil for doing this to dan, but at the same time, she was angry with dan for allowing phil to mess with him like this. corey didn't deserve the heartbreak, dan didn't deserve the stress, and phil didn't deserve dan.
