Abel
"Hey," I say as Kaia gets into the passenger seat.
She looks beautiful in her long black satin dress that has a split in it, exposing her leg.
I fight the urge of resting my hand on her thigh.
Kaia smiles at me. "Hey," she replies. "How are you?"
"Better," I answer, starting the engine and driving away.
"You look it," Kaia comments. She clears hee throat. "Are you still smoking or drinking?"
I shake my head. "No," I tell her honestly.
"That's good," Kaia says, turning to face the window. I almost jump when I feel her place her hand on my shoulder. "I'm proud of you."
I stop at a red light and turn to pick her hand up from my shoulder. I brush my lips against- her soft skin before kissing it. "I missed you," I tell her in a quiet voice. I look up at her to find a small smile on her face.
"I missed you too," Kaia whispers. She leans in and cradles my cheek.
Just when we're about to kiss, a car behind us honks.
I look out towards the window to find that the red light has changed to green. "Fuck," I curse to myself under my breath.
Kaia giggles and quickly kisses my cheek before shifting in her seat to get commendable again.
I start driving again. "Do you want to skip dinner and go back to the house?" I ask, hopeful that she'll say yes.
Kaia lets out a breathy laugh. "I'd love to do that, Abe," she tells me. "But my baby is hungry." She rests a hand on her stomach, smiling down it.
I purse my lips. Damn, I forgot about that baby inside her. "Okay," I say, nodding.
"Do you think it's a boy or a girl?" Kaia asks and I feel myself getting slightly frustrated.
"I don't know," I mutter under my breath.
Kaia laughs. "What would you want it to be?" she questions.
I grit my teeth. "I don't know," I repeat
When Kaia doesn't say anything, I turn to find her frowning at me. "You're still not okay with this, are you?" she asks in a whisper.
I shrug, turning back to face the road. "It's just a lot to adjust to," I say. "That's all. Just give me time, okay?"
"How much time, Abel?" Kaia asks, her voice wobbling. I don't say anything and she sighs. "Abel?"
"I don't fucking know, Kaia!" I snap, causing her to jump. I instantly feel bad for raising my voice, but I hate the fact that she's pressing me for answers. "Having a baby was hardly in the cards for me."
"I know that," Kaia says. "I'm sorry. I don't know why I was thinking that you're feelings towards this baby would change instantly."
"Don't be sorry," I say, putting a hand on her thigh. "It's just hard to get used to the fact that I'm going to become a Dad. I'm such a fuck up."
