I was finally done packing. I plopped down on the bed, picking up my phone and checking my messages.
I had a text from Casey. what're you doing today girl??? - casey
camping with the neighbours. Left a note at the cafe, won't be back till sunday night xx -Keira.
I typed out my reply and tossed my phone beside me. The clock on my wall read five thirty and i knew we would be on the way to malouf's mountain campgrounds in an hour.
I hadn't really thought about camping since... he passed away. i sat down on the edge of my bed, zipping my duffel bag shut.
I looked at the bracelet on my wrist. The gold chain with the writing engraved on it still made my heart ache.
Unconditional love, my precious.
I mouthed the words silently to my self. My precious.
I smiled slightly, remembering why he chose those words exactly. As a young girl i was obssessed with fantasy and when i watched lord of the rings, i was hooked. He said those words stuck to him, he said that i was his precious.
I wiped a stray tear, tearing my eyes away from the bracelet. I sighed as i heard the front door shut close.
"Keira?" My mom yelled out.
"Up here." I shouted back.
"Why did you come hom eearly today?" She said, looking at me with worry.
"I got a light burn." I said, showing her my bandaged hand.
"Oh my baby!" She said, coming closer and taking hold of my hand.
"It's fine mom, it's a first degree burn." I said, shurgging.
"We should cancel this trip." She said, placingher hands on her hips.
"No!" I said. "No we should go, i'm fine... really it doesn't even hurt." She bit her lips but nodded slowly.
"Are you sure?" She asked. I nodded once more with a smile. She nodded, almost to herself.
"Let me go get ready."
I stripped out of my pants and shirt and pulled on my jean shorts and a black tank top. I wore my favorite army jacket.
I slipped on my black converse and put my shades on, slinging my bag over my shoulder.
I descended down the stairs were my mom waited. We went out of the house, locking the door behind us.
Lissa and Josh waited in the car and josh had a huge grin on.
"HI Keira!" He yelled excitedly. I waved at him, letting out a laugh.
My mom set her bag in the trunk of lissa's car and got into the passenger seat.
"You'll be driving with Shane." She said, shutting the door. right in that moment Shane honked his horn. I raised my eyebrow at my mom, who was grinning childishly.
I shook my head, sighing. I nodded once and turned around, jogging to Shane's truck. I got into the passenger seat and grinned at him. He grinned back.
I don't know what changed between us but i was sure liking this side of him. I put on my seatbelt and we followed Lissa's car out of the driveway.
-
We drove on the highway, speed reaching up to 100.
"Slow down a bit, will you??" I said. Shane let out a deep laugh. "You're above speed limit!" I tried again.
He ignored me and reached forward to change the radio chanel.
I scowled at him.
The song dreaming by smallpools started playing and i squeeled.
I moved to the music and got ready to yell out the lyrics.
"We've got no place to go! Caught up in the rodeo! oh no please god tell me we're dreaming!"
"We've got no where to run! They've all got loaded guns! Oh no please god tell me we're dreaming!" Shane continued.
"omg you know it!" I yelled, shocked. He just laughed and continueed.
"But you led them to our hideout, forced their way inside now they want us to surrender. us to surrender."
"But i could go all night right here between their crossfire, we'll send them up a message. i'll send a message." We sang together. I shutup as i watched him continue singing.
When the song ended he looked at me. "What?" He asked with an amused smile.
"I just.."
"DIdn't think i sing?"
"You have quite a voice..." I said, shrugging.
He laughed, shaking his head.
"You have quite the voice too.. the voice that makes windows crack." He added quietly.
"Hey!" I said, slapping his arm playfully.
-
We stopped at a station and i got out to buy some snacks.
I grabbed a couple of bags of chips and some twislers. Shane was leaning on his car as he filled it up.
I watched as he took out a cigarette box, popping a cig into his mouth. I frowned, didn't know he smoked. He inhaled and exhaled, the smoke visibly coming out of his mouth. I turned away, paying the clerk and walking back to him.
"Didn't know you smoked." He shrugged, throwing the cigarrete on the ground and crushing it with his foot. "This is gas station you idiot!" I said, telling him off. He just got back into the car, taking my bag of snacks with him.
-
The rest of the ride was silent, not the uncomfortable kind. I caught site of the camp in front of us and i could see lissa's car coming to a stop.
They waved to us and Shane grabbed our bags, hauling them to the cabin.
I entered the cabin which has been cleaned for us.
"Okay, sleeping arangements!" My mom yelled from the other room.
We all went into the main room and i sat on the chair.
"Alright so i'm thinking.. kids in one room and us in the other." My mom said, Lissa was nodding.
Shane just shrugged, entering one of the rooms. I nodded and followed him.
Josh came running into the room and jumped on the bed screaming.
"Calm down." Shane said calmly. Josh just giggled and jumped onto me.
"Someone's really hyper." I said, letting out a a laugh.
Josh rushed out of the room as Lissa and my mom announced they were going for a hike.
"Guess it's just me and you." I said, sighing.
"Guess so." He said, plopping down on the bed and plugging in his earphones.
I scowled at him.
"You're going to stay here and listen to music?"
'can't hear you.' He mouthed, pointing at his earphones.
"Asshole." I muttered.
I sat next to him, shooting daggers into him.
I gave up after a few minutes of being ignored and layed down.
