Caught In The Storm

Chapter 2

Veronica's POV
I stumble out of my car, already very late. I run through the airport, trying to get to Betty's gate on time. I reach into my pocket and grab my phone. Frantically I go onto iMessage and scroll through my messages until I find the one with Betty.
Gate #17
I look up and see that I'm standing by gate #3. Great. Again, I start running. I look down at my designer watch and see the time.

Betty's plane was supposed to land at 4:00. I'm almost at her gate when I feel myself slam right into someone. I stumble backwards, but I don't fall.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry" I stammered, picking up loose pieces of clothing that had fallen out of the strangers suitcase.
"Hey it's okay, no worries" a male's voice says.
For the first time I actually look at him. We meet eye contact and hold it. He has gorgeous blue eyes. After a few moments he's the one who breaks eye contact.
"So do you maybe want to get dinner together sometime?" the handsome stranger says.
"I...um...I have a husband I have to go" I say fast, and run off towards gate #17.

Betty's POV
Where is Veronica? She knew that my plane landed at 4:00 and I was by gate #17. I impatiently check my phone. No text. I debate texting Archie, but we haven't talked or even texted in 2 years. I check the time.

I'm just about to text Veronica when I hear my name. I turn around to see her running towards me.
"BETTY!" she yells and hugs me, almost tackling me.
"Hey V" I respond, laughing.
"I'm so sorry I'm late. Archie was distracting me and then I ran into this super cute stranger and I really tried to get here in time" she says, fast and out of breath.
"It's okay" I respond, laughing. I grab my bags and we start walking.
"We have so much to catch up on, B" Veronica exclaims.
"Let's get to the car first." I respond.
We walk through the airport until we get to the parking garage. Veronica leads us to her car and we get in. The instant she starts her car, she starts talking. I only hear little snippets because that's not where my attention is at. I'm too busy thinking about how in a few hours I'll be in Riverdale. The town that raised me. You're supposed to love your hometown, but I have butterflies in my stomach, and it isn't because I'm excited. I haven't seen anyone in so long. Everyone's changed and grown up without me. What if everyone's mad at me for leaving?
"So what's new with you" Veronica says, snapping me out of my thoughts and giving me a little shove. "Oh my gosh, I can't believe I forgot to ask! Tell me all about the proposal! Let me see your ring!"
I show her my hand, and she squeals.
"It's amazing! You are so lucky, B" Veronica says, focused more on me than on the road. "I want to know everything!"
I start to tell her the story of the proposal. It was all very cliché. He took me to a fancy restaurant and during dessert he got down on one knee and popped the question. I love him, so I didn't even hesitate to say no.
"That's literally so cute Betty" Veronica responds.
I smile.

Archie's POV
I sit at Pop's, waiting for Veronica and Betty to arrive. Veronica left over 4 hours ago, so they should be here soon. I check my phone, but all I see is a text from Jughead.
Betty's coming into town?! To get married?! How could you not tell me?!
I actually did mean to tell him, I've just been super busy and we drifted apart anyway. I start to text back when I hear the door open. I look up and Veronica and Betty come strolling in.
"Hey honey" Veronica says, giving me a kiss on the cheek. "I'm going to order us some milkshakes and go to the bathroom, I'll be back" she adds.
She walks away and Betty slides into the booth across from me.
"Hey" she says, but I can't do it. I can't pretend that what happened last time we saw each other didn't happen.
"You didn't tell Veronica, did you?" I blurt out, keeping my voice hushed. Betty gives me a confused look. "About what we did at Thanksgiving" I clarify. Her eyes light up as she remembers.
"A simple hi would've been nice, but no I didn't. Did you?!" She asks.
"No and I never will" I respond. "And you better not either"
"I'm back!" comes Veronica's voice as she sets down three milkshakes.
With that, the conversation is over, but Betty gives me a look that says "I won't."
