Chapter Two

Two days later

Jason's POV

Luke and I decided to take the kids out on ATVs today and things were going well until Luke got thrown off. “Damn it!” I yelled and hopped off of my ATV. “Luke!” I went over to him because he never got up. “Man.. I need to go to the hospital.” He was trying to sit up so I helped him. “What's wrong?” “It’s my ankle.” He tried to get up and fell down. “I got you.” I grabbed him. “Thanks man.” I told the kids to ride back to the house then I helped Luke onto my bike and rode back to his house. I was going to help him back into the house but he stopped me. “No man let's go to the hospital.” “Alright.” “Alright.” He texted his wife then I helped him into my truck. When we got to the hospital they took Luke right to the back so I went and sat with him. After about a five minute wait the doctor came in. “Hi I'm doctor Sterling.” “Hey doc.. I messed my ankle up, you have to help me.” “Alright, what happened?” “I was riding an atv and got thrown off. I hit my leg now here I am.” “Alright.” He took Luke's shoe off and looked at it. “You have a really bad spring Mr Bryan. So I'm going to give you a boot. I want you to wear it for a week, keep it dry, keep it clean and you should be fine.” “You don't need an ex ray?” “No, your pain is coming from here.” He traced a line under Lukes ankle bone. “Yeah.” “So I don't want to expose you to any radiation for no reason.” “Alright.” “I'm also going to give you painkillers to help you deal with the pain.” “Alright.” They got his leg together and sent us on our way. When luke and I got back to his house we talked for a while. “This shit hurts.” He started. “I know it does. Your whole leg is swollen.” “It doesn't feel like any twisted ankle that I've had ever before.” “What does it feel like?” “Like something snapped in my leg.” “We should have told them to do an xray.” He was shaking his head. When it started to get late I told luke that I'd check on him then I went home.

One week later.

Kristen's POV

Today I got the kids up at 3:45am and took them to my parents house then went to work. I had three surgeries to do today starting at 5 so I got to work early and read my charts. “Dr mills you're first patient is here.” The nurse said. “Alright.” I finished up on some of the previous doctors notes. When I finished I went and talked to the patient about how the surgery was going to go. After he was prepped I went into surgery. *15 hours later.* I just finished my last surgery and to say I was exhausted would have been an understatement. It's 7 o'clock right now and my shift is over so I was getting ready to go home. A nurse came in. “Dr Mills?” Yes?” I looked at her. “The emergency room is calling for you.” I was confused. “Why?” “There's a patient with a hurt leg who has been here three times.. He doesn't want the same doctor working on him because he said that the went fixing the problem.” “He's been here three times?” I was slightly annoyed. “Yes.” “What did the er doctor say?” “That he has a twisted ankle but he says it's not.” She kinda just stared at me. “Anything else I should know?” “I'm not a doctor but I'm with the patient.. It looks broken.” “How long has he been waiting?” “Four hours.” “Ok I'm on my way.” “Ok, you want his chart?” “You have it with you?” “Yes.” “Yeah, thanks.” She gave me the chart and left. I tried not to take a long time reading the chart so he wouldn't have to wait even longer. After I saw that the did do any xrays I was pissed off. I put my stuff down and headed to the emergency room. I was extremely pissed off but I wasn't going to take it out on the patient.

Jason's POV

Today I was going to go and check on luke because he told me that he was going back to the ER. I took a shower and got dressed then headed to his house. When I got there his wife let me in so I went and found him. He was laying on the couch. “What's going on?” I asked and he sat up. “This fucking leg.” “It's still hurting as bad as when it first happened?” “Even more now.” “Damn. Well I'm free to take you to the ER if you want me too.” “I don't even know if I want to go because I went earlier this week and they said the same thing.” “We can ask for another doctor?” I suggested “Alright.” I helped him up and out to my truck. When we got to the hospital they triaged him then we had to wait. Once we got to the back the same doctor came in. “Back Mr Bryan?” “It's hurting worse now.” “Have you been keeping the boot on?” “Yes.. It’s not helping.” I could tell Luke was annoyed. “Have you been walking on it?” “No, other than coming here I've been in the bed.. I think you need to take an x ray or something.” “Mr Bryan I know you're in pain but I can tell you that you only have a spring..” “I know what a spring feels like, this isn't it.” “The painkillers aren't even working.” I added. “Can you get another doctor?” “I can but they'll tell you the same thing.” He left and luke shook his head. After about an hour of waiting Luke had hit his boiling point. “What the fuck?!” “I'll get a nurse.” I said getting up. “Um.” I walked over to the desk. “Excuse me?” “Yes sir?” A nurse said looking at me. “My friend asked for another doctor to see him and no one has been in, and he's in a lot of pain.” “Ok I'll get another doctor to come look at him.” “Thanks.” I went back to the room and sat with Luke. “What did they say?” “That someone will be in.” “Man..” In the middle of talking the door opened. “Mr Bryan?” “Yes.” “I'm Kylie, the nurse practitioner I'll be helping you tonight.” “Ok.. Something is wrong with my foot.” She took his boot off and looked at his leg. “It looks like you have a sprained ankle.” “No, I know what a spring feels like.. This isn't it.” “Judging..” The nurse came in. “Yes?” The nurse said. “He asked for water.” “He can't have any right now.” “Ok.” She was about to leave when Luke started. “I think you should do an x ray.” “Mr Bryan it's just a sprained ankle. You have to give it time to heal before you come back. I can reset the boot and give you painkillers but that's all that's wrong.” He was shaking his head. “Can we get another doctor in here just to be sure?” I asked. “Dr Sterling is the head er doctor.” “Well can you get someone from another department because I am in pain and it doesn't seem like you're listening to me.” “Mr Bryon I am listening to you and I'm telling you that you just have a sprained ankle.” He shook his head. “I want another doctor to at least look at it.” “You're in pain mr Bryan and it feels like something more is wrong.” “No, something else IS wrong.” He said cutting her off. “Give us a second mr Bryan.” They left and the nurse came in and looked at his leg. “Keep asking for another doctor mr Bryan. They have to have someone come down and see you.” She whispered. “Thanks.” She was about to leave when the guy and nurse came back in. “Mr Bryan we are the only doctors here in the emergency department that can see you right now.” “Um..” Another nurse came into the room. “Dr Mills came out of the OR, I can call her?” “Ok that's fine.” They left and the nurse looked at me. “Dr Mills is really good. If something is wrong she will find it.” “Are you sure?” “Yeah, 100 percent. If I needed to be seen I would go right to her. Trust me she's awesome.” “Will she do x rays?” “I think so.” The other nurse came in and closed the door. “Mr Brian dr Mills should be here any minute now. I gave her your chart and told her about your leg so she's coming to help.” “Thank you.” “Was she mad?” The Nurse whispered. “She was not, she was nice to me.” “What did she say?” “Asked if they took x rays of his foot and how long has he been here.” “She was probably pissed.” “She asked if I had seen it and I told her yeah, it was swollen and red.” “Damn.. I'm leaving before she gets in here.” “Me too.. Oh prep him for x rays because you know she's going to order them..” “I did, and you know she's going to be mad. I'm going to tell her that I wanted to put the iv in but I couldn't because they said it was a quick fix.” “Mhm.” “Is this doctor mean?” Luke asked. “No, she's nice.” They both smiled and looked at him. “Alright mr Bryan, press that red button if you need anything while you're waiting alright?” “Ok.” As soon as they opened the door we could hear talking. “Someone called me?” “Yes a patient wanted a third opinion on his sprained ankle.” “What's his blood pressure?” “180/100.” “That's high, did you give him anything?” “No.” “Ok let's see him.” “Shit.” The nurses mumbled and I kinda laughed.
