"Honey!! Wake up you'll be late for classes!" Mum said opening the window curtains to let sunlight in.
"Mum..! Not again it's still early in fact am not going today!" I told her in a very lazy tone.
"What do you mean you are not going today? You better get hold of yourself and get ready for class or am just going to assume the reason for being this lazy nowadays is because you are pregnant" she said exiting the room.I just had to get up and act like nothing is happening to avoid her doubting me. While in the shower I had time to think and reflect on my life. Was my nerdy life perfect before all this or is it perfect now? Am I the right kind of person Kenya needs right now? Should I let my mum know of what happened few weeks ago? For the first time I feel so confused and the only person who can ease this burden is Mike.
As I was standing on my locker side I couldn't help but hear voices and people's conversations and even their thoughts. I tried to block them off because it was a lot to take at once so I just walked away.
I was now trying to find Mike to see if I can meet his bro Sickler for more tests but he was no where to be found.
"Thank God it's the last lesson." Mary said to her friends as they made their way to their seats.
"So class I have prepaired an assignment for you. It's a bit different this time and am pretty sure this will be your favorite one," said the lecturer.
Passing on some papers to us and waiting on our reaction with folded arms.
"Wait is this a joke?" asked one of my classmates.
"Mr. Harry is this real?" Asked another one.
I Perused through my copy and the first thing I saw was South Africa. I read more to understand it but I couldn't the whole class was now a market and I could feel the pressure in my head.
"Let me explain to you!" Mr Harry started.
We all went to a silence zone."I had talked to the board about this and we agreed that you guys deserve this trip, but don't forget it's an assignment too. The board has agreed to pay for your transportation and accommodation only, any other expenses will be self catered." He said.
"This is amazing Sir... you are the best!" Said a familiar voice right behind me.
I turned to look and it was Mike."Have you been here all this while?" I asked him.
"I never left!" He said smiling at me.
I smiled back, this was a great opportunity for Mike and I to work on Me.....and the assignment too.
"Can you believe we are going to South Africa?" He asked me excited.
"Just Imagine.. we are going to have a lot of fun!" I replied."It's seems like you guys are so excited about the trip that you don't even want to know what the assignment is." Mr Henry said.
We stopped chattering and stared at him.
He posed for few seconds the the bell rang.
"Saved by the bell...your assignment is very simple, find out why we chose you guys and why this trip to South Africa!" He said leaving the classroom with few more copies
It stayed silence for a min then the class went all noisy again.
I turned to Mike who was behind me and he was gone. This is that time when I feel like he's avoiding me, but I know where to get him.Today has been a long day I just wanted to go home and take a nap first then I can think of the assignment later. I kept all my books in my locker then I locked it with a four numbered passcode.
"Is that Martha?" I asked myself, moving closer to her. Six lockers away stood a girl who looked very familiar to me.
"Martha!" I yelled the moment I was sure it was her.
"Hey Sera! What are you doing here?" She asked me.
"Hi I was going to ask you the same thing, did you come back from SA?" I asked her.
"Yes my parents transferred again. I hate moving all the time like I just want to be here where my friends and family are. Tell me about you," she said.
"Well am ok nothing interesting about me.. still here trying to build a rocket!" I teased. She laughed because she got the joke. "Well I'll be here with my phone capturing the moments, you know when it's taking off!" She said we both end up laughing.
I helped her pack up the books she needed then we left for home."By the way where is Yvonne? Not heard from her for months now. We use to FaceTime at least twice a week but I can't reach her now!" She cried
Asking about Yvonne took me back to when my life changed. How it took a turn and went the exact opposite direction. It was a tragic time for all of us.
I couldn't tell her about what happened but I could just tell her half of the truth.
"Yvonne was not well for awhile so she missed school a lot and with time she moved out of the country. I would tell you where but I have no idea too,"I said to her. She just shook her head.
Good think she didn't ask me anymore questions.Martha was this chic I went to high school with She's that person that doesn't really care about what anyone said about her. She had several piercings including one under her lower lip on the left. She had dreadlocks too and was brown skinned.
She was my high school best friend until she moved away and we slowly drifted apart.
"Am so glad I came back to Kenya. This is where I belong, with you and my other friends and now we are in the same school, this is a good comeback," she said offering me a hug."Aww Martha... I missed you!" I said to her in our little friendship hug.
