Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months.
I was still exploring my new self since it was way too different from my previous normal life.
I was this 22 year old who spent most of her times studying with her other nerd friends. I was either in the school library or at a public library reading...but since what happened happened, am always at the lab with Mike and his brother getting tested. My best friend Mike wants me to play Superhero, he wants to use wherever that I have to save the world. How could I when I have no idea what am suppose to do.
At home it was really hard for my family to notice anything since they were always working.
We are living in a 3 bedroom house around Umoja estate near Nyali Cinemax.
Our neighbors are the typically curious ones. They want to know what we eat everyday, if we pay our bills on time, what time my mum gets home, if am really going to school, why we haven't bought a car yet, how my dad can stay away for so long, if we keep in touch with our other family members... and all that you could possibly think of.
So I was scared to even do anything that would make them notice my changes.
At home, I would really act normal, which would kill me inside knowing that I can do things really fast or use shortcuts but still couldn't... all eyes were on me.As I sat on my bed thinking to myself what will happens now. Is this it? What should I do with all this?
My cell phone rings and it's Mike...Literally the only person that calls me everyday.
"Sup Mike! What's new?" I asked him after i received his call.
"Hey... Sera...did you watch the news?" Mike asked on the other line.
"No... I don't watch Tv and you know that..what happened?" I asked him back.
"There was an attack under the Nyali Bridge last night... it's breaking news... it's all over the news" he said terrified.
"Ok.. let me watch...but what does this have to do with me Mike...?" I asked him.
"That's where you come in Sera... you can stop all this from happening or prevent more damage. You are the only one capable of stopping this... you are intangible." He said and then hanged up the phone.I ran Downstairs, turned on the Tv to one of our local channels and there it was.
There was a CCTV footage of the attackers going down the bridge but no footage of what exactly happened because there were no cameras down there.
The police said that the attackers were 3 men and a lady and had Ak47. Their faces were tampered with so no one knows who they were. Their main aim was to still a very large amount of Money that was being transferred from a restaurant the bank.
Before they did that the driver pushed an alarm button beneath his seat and an emergency alarm went on. They panicked and shot the driver on the thigh and ran away not able to go through with their plans.
The Driver was then taken to the hospital and he's now giving his statement.
"Three of them stood in front of the vehicle and pointed their guns at me to stop. I was confused but then I remembered the alarm button slightly under my seat so I stopped the car and ran my fingers carefully under the seat to search for the button. They moved step by step ready for anything as one of them asked for the key."Ni Nini hiyo.... ni Nani amefanya hivyo?"(What's that... who did that?) Said one of them after I set the alarm on. The sound was so irritating that it confused them.
"Kwanini umefanya hivyo... tupatie ufunguo haraka la sivyo utakufa!" (Why did you do that?...give us the key faster or you will die.) yelled one of them.
The alarm was so loud that they couldn't do what they came there to do. One of them approached me a shot me on my thigh. They ran away. Few minutes later the police came then the ambulance." The victim said... tears going foe his cheeks.
"It's God's work that am even alive today... thank you God," he cried.
I turned off the tv and went to my room. That's where I can really put myself to think deeper. If I become what Mike wants me to be, it will mean giving up my life for others and am pretty sure am not ready for that. I will just continue being who I am. Go to school and try to be normal.
At around 12.30 am past midnight, my mum called me asked me to find her one of my cousin who lives one block away from us so that he can pick my mum from the stage. My mum always gets home very late and it's not safe for her to walk alone.
I went on and called my cousin Derrick who with his friends will accompany my mum home safe.Derrick wasn't picking up his phone... I was so worried, anytime now my mom will alight from the public bus and no one will be there.
I had to do something. I took my coat wore it and went out heading to Derrick's house. I tried knocking but it seemed like somebody wasn't home.
I looked at the tarmac road that was lightened by street lights and I thought to myself, why waste more time knocking on this door when I can just rush to the stage fast, pick up my mum and head back home... what could possibly happen?
I did so."Mum, your shift is crazy," I said helping her with her bags.
"Yes my daughter... I have to work my dear," she replied with a sigh.We walked peacefully for a few seconds until a group of 3 men approached us.
"Give us everything," one of them said with gestures.
"We don't have anything... these is just food from the hotel." My mum said terrified.
"We'll take the food too... your phones, money and those shoes too." The one with a panga said.
All that time I was quiet, I didn't know what to do or say.
We did as they instructed and then they asked us to sleep on the ground on our tummies with our heads down so that they can disappear.
I looked at my mum...poor woman she doesn't deserve to be treated that way.
I will let them go for now but they will surely pay for what they have done to us!
