"Hey Mike... wait up..!" I yelled afew meters away from Mike. I ran to him trying to catch up with his pace coz he sure didn't want me to.
"Are you avoiding me?" I asked him. Giving him that serious look.
"Am good thanks for asking," he dodged my questions. "Come on Mike you know what am talking about, if there's anything you can just tell me instead of Avoiding me," I said in an annoyed tone.
"There's nothing wrong and I think you are just being skeptical. Why would I avoid you? We've been through so much," he said trying to hide his guilt. "Exactly my point! Mike? What's up?" I asked him politely. Looking deep into his eyes I knew he did something.
"Even if I have to tell you, now is not the right time for that," he went on trying to avoid it once again.
"I can just read your mind you know.... and I won't be able to isolate what am supposed to know and what not supposed to know," I threatened him.
"Alright you win, but first promise me you'll not get mad?" He started, waiting patiently for my reply. I really wanted to know so bad but I couldn't just promise something I couldn't keep. What if it's really bad I became very mad?
"Or you can tell me first then I'll decide whether or not I'll be mad," I said to him.
This was totally a trick I wasn't expecting Mike to buy.
"Alright, anyhow you'll still find out sooner or later," he said pulling me to a quiet place.
"So I accidentally told your Mum you are the Sensational Mask person!" He whispered biting his teeth and definitely not looking at me.
"Come again?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yes Sera... I told your mum. Am really sorry," he cried in guilt.
"Why did you do that... you promised you'd let me tell her when am ready, you promised not to tell anyone unless I told you too," I cried.
"But I didn't tell her everything," he said in a guilty tone.
"Of course you didn't, you left the hard part to me that I wasn't ready to tell. You can't just zip it!" I yelled.
"Am sorry Sera, I tried to, she was wondering why you have changed and since I was your closest friend she asked me if I knew why," he explained.
"When did all of this happen?" I asked him, my sharp eyes on him.
"This Morning," he replied terrified.
I didn't understand why he looked scared. Was it because he's afraid to loose me or he's just afraid of what am capable of. I felt like a monster.
"Well I better get home and deal with whatever is waiting for me there all thanks to you!" I cried. Leaving the corridors of our school so upset.
I didn't tell my mom because I wasn't ready to accept all this. I thought it was a temporary thing that will go away soon so that I go back to my old self. I was wrong.
Now as I walk to get myself a Taxi, I was building up and breaking down excuses to give my mum because the one I have been holding on to isn't Excuse enough. What he did was bad. That was my call, not his.
I walked home and it was quieter than usual. I was so nervous and I thought a few times why I still wasn't ready for all of this. First of all, what was I doing along Mombasa Road.. in a secret underground lab that none of the citizens of this country knew about? That might be a big government issue that will put my family's life in danger. It might costs us our lives. I was so scared.
"Sera!" A voice called from the living room. I stopped and turned away from the kitchen's entrance and saw mum on the Sofa.
"Mum, Shikamoo (a swahili greeting to all elders) I didn't see you there," I said nervously.
I walked towards the living room and stood on the opposite side, away from her. I knew what she's capable of and I was scared if she tries to hit me, it will channel other abilities that am not aware of.
"How are you doing?" She asked calmly.
"Ummm...Am w...ell., thank you?" I stammered. I didn't expect her to be this calm. She really go me off guard.
"Sit down please," She instructed.
I sat on the edge of the sofa ready for anything. I wasn't comfortable at all.
"My child.. you know you are the only one in my life. You also know that you can come to me for anything anytime. Right?" She started.
"Yes mum, am sorry I was going to tell you, I just wasn't ready to face it," I cried.
"It's dear would you mind, telling me," she asked.
"Yes mum," I said. I figured that she knows about who I am but not how I became.
So I started explaining to Mum how we got to know about the government secrets and how we tried to stop it. I told her everything never leaving even a full stop behind. Mum sat with her jaws dropped surprised of how much I have gone through.
"Mum are you okay" I asked her after I realized she never even said word.
"Are you for real? You think this is some kind of a movie? I struggle with 2 jobs to pay for your university fees and you are here telling me you are the Mask girl! That's what they teach you at school?" She cried.
"Mum!" I said confused.
"Don't mum me... and on top of that you are pregnant too... Do you want to kill me?" She yelled.
"Whaat? Pregnant!" I asked.
"Don't deny it, your friend Mike told me and and I didn't believe it so he told me to ask you. I thought you were going to tell me about it but you brought with you some impossible confessions," she yelled at the top of her voice. Typical African Mums.
"What are you talking about? I am not pregnant. The only thing I was hiding from you is whatever I've told you. That's it," I cried trembling in surprise.
"You are not pregnant?" She asked changing her face from anger to concern.
"No mum, the only thing I am is the Mask girl,"I said.
"I am so sorry dear.. for getting upset with you. Mike told me and I believed him. Why would he lie to me like that?" She cried.
I asked myself the same question of why Mike would tell my mum a different story then tell me a different one. Then I realized what he was trying to do here.
"Don't worry Mum I think I know why he did that," I told her.
"Tell me coz I find that disrespectful," she said feeling deceived.
"He did that so that I can tell you myself about what has been happening to me lately, and it worked!" I said smiling.
"He's a genius but tell him his punishment is still waiting for him," mum joked.
We laughed. Then shared a very silent moment.
"So Mask girl? Wow!" She cut the silence.
"Yes mum! Your daughter has Powers mum!" I cheered.
"Tell me more coz i still find all this hard to believe," she said.
"More of Showing," I told her as I show her some of my tricks. She was in shock and thought some of them were sorcery. Haha I don't blame her. Sorcerers do them too. At least We all have heard of such cases, especially here in Africa.
