Chapter 16 - Then
Jade can be annoying when it comes to dances. She is like the mix of the scary hardcore friend and the girly girly who is constantly talking about clothes and boys. So of course, a week before the Day Dance, Jade is ready to take me shopping.
I am sitting in History when my phone lights up. The bold lettering across the screen can only be interpreted as Jade's, because no one else could be that excited to text me. I glance at the teacher before grabbing it and hiding it behind my laptop. The message has a red circle emoji before it, claiming to be 'urgent'. I unlock my phone and read it over.
MEET ME BY MY TRUCK AFTER SCHOOL, I TALKED TO YOUR DAD
If I wasn't sitting in class right now, I would have laughed out loud.
Jade is sitting in the bed of her truck waiting and groans when I walk up. "You do realize I've been sitting here for five minutes waiting for you?"
"Jade, I actually use my locker so I have to go there before leaving, plus, your class is right by the door while mine is across the school"
"You could have snuck out early," She sighs and walks to the front door. "We could be late"
"Late for what?"
"Shopping duh!" I give her a skeptical look "For your dress" I shake my head before shutting the passenger door. A tap on my window scares me.
Camdon is standing there smiling, I roll the window down and give him a bored look.
"Whatdayawant?" I mumble, hoping he gets the clue, "I'm not helping you with school anymore"
"Chill Cee, I just wanted to know what you were up to. I'm supposed to drive you home today"
"Oh sorry. Jade's taking me shopping"
"For a preeettttyyy dress" Jade adds on and I sigh with an exhausted smile.
"Okay. I'll meet you there" Camdon salutes before walking away.
"Did he just-?" I start but Jade interrupts with a laugh.
"He just invited himself and got away with it, that kid" She turns the key and the engine jumps to life for only a second before we are backing up and flying out. I grab the handle as we turn a sharp corner out of the parking lot.
"I should have just rode with Camdon" I mumble as we start the hour drive to the mall.
The Seattle Mall is an interesting place. It's so different than home, mainly because there are so many people. The couple walking in next to us is speaking German, and Camdon, who was on our tail the whole ride even though Jade tried to shake him, is trying to translate their conversation to us. Of all the subjects for Cam to excel at, it would have to be German class. Though, he probably does much better when he can hear the whole conversation.
"Something about drinking. The guy just said cat. Drink again. Or is that fountain? I can't remember. She's ranting about clothes, wait no she said hamburg-"
"Just shut up Cam, we don't need to eavesdrop" Jade shushes him while pulling me along.
After a little bit and walking we reach a fancy store. The store is blowing with air conditioning even though it's only February, and the music playing sounds french. I shiver as I take in the fancy dresses in the window. By the look on Camdon's face, I can tell he is already regretting this decision. Jade pulls me away from the expensive ones thank God, and towards the clearance.
