Zoe's P.O.V
I woke up in cold sweat. I checked the clock. It was still 5 a.m. and if my dream was correct my parents were on their way. The sleeping pill's affects were wearing off. I figured they wouldn't have given me a heavy dose afraid that I would get sick. And I took the pill past six yesterday. My brother was still out which I expected.
The dreams had left images behind lingering in my mind. Some I wanted to believe were fake and some real but there wasn't a choosing factor here. It all had to be real or fake, and my parents coming made it real. I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard a honk come from the gate. I dashed down the hallway trying not to let my nostalgia get in the way. I pushed the door open and ran into my parents arms.
Oh, how good it was to be somewhere safe. My dad hugged me tight while my mother searched me for injuries like I was the one in war.
"How good it is to see my daughter. Where's your brother?" My dad asked.
Shit, I was so focused on seeing my parents I didn't think about explaining the neighbours rumours and Zacks tales. I could count on him snitching everything because kids like him had no filter.
My dad led us into the house, greeting his humble accommodation. Both of them surveyed their house probably carving every detail in their memories after so long. It must have been hard hearing all that was happening and not being able to protect your loved ones.
They both settled down on the couch. I watched as my dad took the single one. Just a day ago Death had been sitting in that chair before he rushed to stop my panic attack. I shook my head and stared at my hands. How was I alive? Death killed those guys by grabbing them yet when he did it to me I didn't recoil. In fact I didn't feel anything different.
"You have some explaining to do, honey." My mom said.
"Yes like how are we here?" My dad asked. "Why did The Remnants pick us up? Who was that guy that appeared in the street? Why is Zack still asleep? And judging from your expression why is it that you know all of this already?"
My expression was a calmed one. I knew I couldn't keep the details hidden especially the fact that Zack was there. So I told them. Everything from Death braking in here to the incident at the Bird park and finally the sleeping pills. My dad just stared at me as if he couldn't believe someone that dangerous had just walked in here. He was now standing by my mother when I told him about the part about him sitting in the same couch. When I finished my mother's expression bothered me. She was shocked at some parts but mostly calm.
"To think he would come here..." She mumbled. "And what about Durban?"
"Durban?" My dad asked confused.
"He was there. He said he was protecting me. Those guys at the Bird park also said they wanted me."
"This is all your fault." My dad said looking at my mother. I didn't understand it but my mother didn't get angry. She shifted in her seat.
She was really beautiful. In fact now she looked like a queen.
"When I was 15, I met a boy..." She explained. "... he was sneaking into my room every night, guarding me. At first I didn't believe him, so I cornered him one night. He was handsome, looked like a king in fact. He carried a sword and a gun, wore all black. "
She got a faraway look in her eyes. I never saw dad so mad.
"I told him to prove it to me. To show what he was protecting me from. That night I'll never forget. He took me to a skyscraper he called his home. He was the leader of The Remnants. His name was Isaac Thales." She let that sink in.
"He told me this gang fought mortals and immortals. Gods...he said, he fought gods. He was a god, had the god Tartarus in him. Thats why we're in danger. All that is supernatural want us, anyone with my bloodline in it. Something special about it. I didn't believe this until they came for me and he protected me. The monsters he raised that night and the people he slayed made me believe. Isaac didn't want to involve me, but he eventually had. I fought beside him and soon fell in love with him. He was perfect. It wasn't until he met the other girl that he settled down. Her name was Danielle. I never understood it until I realized she was hosting Gaia the earth goddess. I left after that and soon after met your dad."
I stared at my dad. She was so badass, but she settled for someone like him. She wanted to start over.
"He still protected me and when his son was born he vowed his son would protect all the others and me. Haven't you wondered why Jake is involved with so much girls? All who is named after the myths have power. Maybe not hosting gods but had powerful blood like us. You think its a coincidence that there's girls named Psyche and Aphrodite? And more of coincidence that Jake is involved with them? He protects them even if they don't know it. Sure he didn't find out all of this until May but subconsciously he needed to. And you're just one of those girls. You're so special people would kill you to have what you have, and it's him that keeps them at bay. He is the last defence. "
I took it in.
It was a lot to take in.
I remembered Jake fighting so hard with Psyche to keep her even though she never understood it. She remembered what he said that day he was here.
They are attacking because of you, He had said.
I was having a panic attack but the worse came next.
"Jake Thales has been through so much shit that it doesn't surprise me that Hades chose him. They've felt the same pain, the same consequences of their decisions. I didn't think he would be so powerful as to break metal with his hands but so be it. Those bandages on his arm? I bet he started cutting himself. Even in Durban, I saved him from falling to his own death. That boy has so much drama to him that no wonder he'd rather leave everyone instead of facing them. He protects us still, Jacob and I won't send him away if he still does that."
With that she got up and left, leaving, both dad and I stunned.
