Scott knew there was no valid reason for the anxiety he felt about admitting it to people. There were other members of his family that fell under the queer umbrella and everyone still loved them. He knew in his heart that he would be accepted all around, but until recently, he had put off telling anyone other than his close friends.
If he was being honest, he was a little scared. There's was something very final about confessing the words out loud to his family that he knew he would never be able to take back. Once they knew, it was over and his secret would be out forever; but he was getting older and he decided that it was time to tell them. They deserved to know the deepest parts of him, to know that he trusted them with his true self, and he was going to tell them today.
The majority of his family lived in various states across the country, so he couldn't sit everyone down and just have one big "coming out" announcement. Instead, he was going to have to call them all separately and tell his story to at least fifteen people. That was fine. Scott could do that.
The two people that needed to know first were his parents. His heart hammered in his chest as his call began to ring out, and before he was truly prepared, his mom's voice was on the other line and he was out of time.
"Scotty! How are you baby? We miss you so much!" Scott was always thankful for how loving his mom was. He didn't say it to her enough, but he couldn't have wished for a better mother.
"Hi mom. I'm good, and I miss you too."
He listened patiently while his mom spoke to him about various parts of her life and then the time finally came when he knew he needed to tell her. It was the reason he had called in the first place, and he wasn't going to back out now no matter how appealing it sounded.
"Um, Mom? I have to tell you something." There was a brief pause before his mother prompted him to continue and then his words were falling through his lips at record speed and he couldn't slow himself down. "I just... I wanted you to know something about me and I thought it was time I told you. I've been putting this off because I know everyone is accepting and no one really cares but I just... I don't know. But I want to tell everyone now...." Scott found himself stopping just before he finally said it, and his words were suddenly caught in his throat. He attempted to continue multiple times but there was a lump forming in his throat and his eyes were watering, and he knew he wouldn't be able to get through his confession at this rate. A full minute passed before his mom was speaking again.
"Honey? I'm listening, Scotty. Please don't be afraid. You know I love you." It was easy to tell that his mom knew what he was getting at, and that knowledge somehow managed to calm the blond enough to get through the rest of his speech.
"I'm gay, mom." The tears began flowing despite the weight lifting off of him. "I'm okay. I don't know why I'm crying. I'm not upset, or ashamed, or anything like that. I guess it's just... an emotional thing to admit this kind of stuff to people."
"You don't sound okay, Scotty. What part are you upset about? You know none of us are going to view you any differently. We will always love you."
"I'm not upset. Not really. I guess you'd have to be gay to understand. It's just really surreal to be telling everyone, and it's an emotional thing even though I know you guys don't care who I bring home." There was another small pause before Scott could hear his mom speaking yet again.
"I guess you're right. Well, you know I love and support you. Just hurry up and bring us home a cute boy!" Scott laughed and rolled his eyes.
"We'll see. I love you."

Coming out to the rest of his friends and family had been painless and gone just as well as he could have hoped. The whole ordeal took a whopping thirty minutes, and Scott couldn't remember the last time he felt so free. It was the first day he could remember that he actively felt like he was free to be his true self. He had planned for this to be a normal day, but it was turning out to be the best day of his life.
The blond decided that he wanted to use the new chapter that had just opened in his life as an excuse to make some changes to his style. He found himself itching for some cute new clothes and shoes, and made his way to the mall without a second thought.
His favorite store was virtually empty of customers and he had no trouble picking out too many outfits to try on. There were a few he knew he loved, and a few he needed better light to decide on. There was a giant mirror outside the fitting rooms that was elevated on a small stage which was meant for the exact purpose of getting a better look at clothes, and Scott was taking full advantage of it.
He was currently studying himself in a pair of khaki joggers and a white turtleneck sweater. He was quickly deciding he liked the colors together, and he was obsessed with the way the pants fit on his long legs. The blond was so caught up in himself that he didn't know he was being watched until someone was speaking to him.
"That looks great on you! What's the occasion? Hot date with the girlfriend?" Scott let his eyes jump to the feminine voice addressing him, and he was stunned when his eyes landed on a petite brunet man. He was beautiful.
"No, no date at all. I wish. I just, uh, came out to my family today and I felt like celebrating with some retail therapy." Scott wasn't sure why he felt the need to overshare with the stranger, but it was too late to take the words back now.
"Well congratulations, blondie! Sorry about not having a date, but I don't think you have to worry. All of us gay boys will be throwing ourselves at you in no time, especially if you keep dressing like that." He blushed as a wink was thrown in his direction and didn't miss the fact that he felt no anxiety about another man flirting with him in public. He watched as the brunet turned to leave but he made a last minute decision not to let him go just yet.
"Wait!" The other man turned back towards him with a grin and Scott could feel his cheeks getting even hotter. "What's your name."
"I'm Mitch. What's yours?" Scott watched as Mitch took another few steps in his direction.
"Scott." He swallowed hard and decided to muster up just a little more courage for the day. "Um... do you have a hot date tonight?" The brunet laughed and shook his head. "Do you maybe want to grab coffee with me?"
"I'd love to."
Scott might have been kidding when he had the initial thought before, but today seemed to actually be turning out to be the best day of his life.
A/N: hiiii! Very loosely based on me coming out to my fam. Just thought I would whip something up while I felt inspired.
