Chapter 1
Scars
I woke up startled, unsure of my surroundings. I blinked rapidly to try and clear the haze from my eyes. After a few seconds the world became clearer. I looked at the clock, which read 4 am. "Great, I got only 2 hours of sleep." I mumbled speaking to myself.
I slugged out of bed debating what to do for the next few hours, until it was a reasonable time to get ready for the first day of the new school year. I put on my tennis shoes and some running clothes, deciding to go for an early morning run to try and clear my thoughts before the day begun.
I stared in the reflection of the long mirror on my wall. I didn't quite enjoy what I saw. My dirty blonde hair was tangled and sticking up every which way. I had dark bags under my eyes from the lack of sleep and my skin was pale and clammy. I probably should have gone outside more over the summer. Maybe I would have gotten some color on my skin and then I thought no I couldn't have. My summer was hell and I spent most of it locked in my room crying.
I ran out the side door to my room letting the hot air hit me. I blasted "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor on my iPod shuffle and began to run without any care of where I was really going. I looked at my moonlit surroundings. The cacti looked utterly creepy and I empathized for all the dead plants. Living in Arizona was awful, but I lived here my entire life, so I never really new what it was like to live anywhere else. The brown landscape was dull and dry. I hadn't seen a drop of rain in 6 months. Instead of rainstorms all we had were mountains of dust that caked the desert, dust storms.
