Merma put the butter on the roll and then went outside to serve the food to her employers. They weren't exactly the people she was expecting; they looked like people, but with shining golden skin. She noticed that the cooks all had blue skin, while the servants had gray skin. She wondered if a person's job was based on their skin color, or the other way around.
Merma handed the tray to the woman. "Thank you," the woman said. Merma was inexperienced with servantry, so she did the cliché thing and curtsied. The woman laughed. "Oh, you don't have to be like that," she said. "We like to keep things 'casual'." She made quotes in the air with her fingers. Merma smiled and then left, casually. She had the next half hour off, and she was going to try to come up with a plan to save Piper.
She waved to Veivlach, a blue-skinned employee who she had become friends with. He looked at his hands questioningly and confusedly waved back. He walked over to her. "Is that what they do on your planet with the funny colored skin?" he asked.
"Hey!" She said. "Don't be a racist!" Veivlach laughed.
"So, what are you up to?" He asked.
"I can't tell you," she said apologetically.
Veivlach faked an offended face. "Why not?" he asked.
"Its... complicated."
He smiled. "I'm smart. Maybe I can help you. And it can't be THAT important. What are you doing? Breaking somebody out of jail?" he joked, not knowing just how close to the truth he really was.
Merma considered letting him help. "Okay," she said, "But you have to promised not to tell ANYBODY. And that means NOBODY. Not your mom, your dad, your cousin, your..."
"Okay! I get it. My lips are sealed. So what is it?"
"We have to go somewhere else. Outside? Your planet is interesting."
