Month One:

Everyone at the tower knew something was up when Bucky and Y/N weren't hanging around each other. It wasn't just strange, it was flat-out unexpected. It had always been Bucky and Y/N, Y/N and Bucky - you two were attached at the hip since he came here, and nothing could separate the two of you.

Or so everyone thought.

The thing was, you had feelings for Bucky since the day you met him. Despite his originally cold demeanor, he was kind to you, and you fell face-first into love with him.

There was one tiny problem - you couldn't tell him. Your friendship had become too valuable, and you knew he didn't feel the same. Well, you expected he didn't. He did constantly flirt with other women, which was a dead giveaway.

But he was so nice to you, so sweet and caring and funny, and it caused a pain in your chest whenever you thought about what it would be like to date him. To hold his hand, go out to the movies and picnics like those rom-coms you love, hold him when his nightmares got bad.

For a while, you tolerated it. You stood your ground and shoved your feelings away so you could be the friend he needed. You had discovered your feelings a month ago and you thought you could get over it. After all, Bucky never was interested in relationships - he could take a girl to bed one night and never see her again. You could live with that.

But then he decided to become serious with one of those girls, and you practically felt your heart shatter. When he spoke about her, like she was a walking goddess and everyone was blessed to be around her, you nearly broke down right then.

So you pulled away. You started cancelling hang-outs, making up excuses, avoiding him in the tower's hallways. It was easier for you to be away from him, than hear him talk up his girlfriend like she was the best thing that ever happened to him.

One month of avoiding him, and Bucky finally had enough.

"Y/N, it's time to talk," he suddenly demanded, charging into the training room where you were alone, packing up your things.

Tensing at the sight of him, you swung your bag over your shoulder, not meeting his gaze. "Uh, sorry Bucky, I have a thing-"

"No, you don't," he stated, stopping in front of you. It was a tad too close to you and you took a slight step back, your lips pressed together in a tight line.

"I checked your schedule, you don't have anything for the rest of the day. We need to talk, Y/N/N."

You flinched at the nickname, eyeing the door and considering a run for it. "No we don't."

"Yes, we do," he grabbed your arms, making you look at him. "Y/N, just tell me what I did. You've been avoiding me so much, I know I did something wrong. I want my friend back."

You suddenly grit your teeth, "That's the problem, Bucky. I can't be just your friend anymore."

His grip on you loosened, his eyes wide. "What?"
