Chapter Nine

As I went back to my room, one of my maids, Dinah, handed me a note.

To: Miss Zatanna Zatara
Hello Miss. Your scheduled day for the family dinner is on July 13. Please dress appropriately, contact Prince Dick for more information.
From: The Royal Family

July 13?! That's tomorrow! Oh my goodness, I hope I make a good impression. But since it's tomorrow, I wouldn't have any time to ask Dick for advice. I decided to just wing it.

As I woke up the next day, I brushed my teeth and headed down to go get breakfast. I met up with Artemis, Megan, Raquel, Starfire, and Raven. We began to talk about when our family dinners were happening.

Starfire then asked when mine was.

"Tonight."

"TONIGHT?!"

"Guys not too loud. But yes mine is tonight. I found out last night too, so I had no time to ask Prince Dick for advice. I'm so nervous because I don't think I'll impress them."

"I'm sure you'll do fine Zatanna." Artemis said with the rest of the girls nodding their heads in agreement.

"I hope so."

We all finished our breakfast then went our respective ways. I was on my way to my room, but then I heard a voice calling my name.

I turned around to see a particular red head.

"Wally! Hey, how are you?"

"I'm doing good, how about you?"

"I'm lightweight stressing. My dinner with Dick's family is tonight and I didn't have time to ask him for some pointers. Actually, you know Dick pretty well, do you mind giving me a few tips on how to impress his family? I just want to make a good impression."

"Of course, just be yourself honestly. The Gotham family may seem intimidating but once you get to know them, they're not so bad."

"Thanks Wally. Well, I've got to go get ready for the dinner. Wish me luck!"

"You'll be fine Zatanna."

I left Wally and went into my room to change into a dark blue dress for the dinner. I paired it with the silver necklace my dad had given to me when I was younger and I let my hair fall down naturally. I slipped on a short pair of heels and made my way towards the royal dining hall.

I was about to open the doors to the room but then a voice called me out.

"Dick? Shouldn't you be inside?"

"I was running late, I lost track of time on my date with Barbara."

"Oh... at least you're here now."

"She's really a nice person once you get to know her. Anyways, let me escort you inside."

He offered me his arm and I linked mine within it.

We walked through the doors and were greeted by the royal family.

"Family, meet Miss Zatanna Zatara."

"Hello, it's nice to see you all again."

I let go of Dick's arm and did a small curtsy.

"I like this one already." said Queen Selina. "She's easy on the eyes and knows her manners."

The other laughed and nodded their heads in agreement.

"Thank you Queen Selina."

"Oh please call me Selina."

Dick gestured me towards a seat next to one of his brothers and he sat down next to me.

"So Zatanna, Dick has already told us a lot about you. You're honestly the only girl he's talked about so far." King Bruce said.

I blushed and so did Dick who told his dad to stop.

"Why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself? Any hobbies, interests..."

King Bruce was interrupted when an explosion was heard throughout the castle.

"What was that?" Tim asked.

Screams were heard throughout the castle.

"It must be the villains. Dick you know what to do." King Bruce said.

Dick looked at me and said I had to go to the safe house with the rest of the representatives and that I couldn't leave until he came to get me.

I began protesting, saying I wanted to fight too, but King Bruce said it was too dangerous.

Dick tried to get me to the safe house. Key word, tried.

We were ambushed as soon as we stepped out of the royal dining hall. They began shooting at us. Dick automatically stood in front of me in hopes of protecting me.

A whirlwind of emotions over flooded me. I could save the both of us with my magic, but Dad said it was too dangerous to expose ourselves. I took a leap of faith and said, "esuoh efas eht ot su tropelet" *teleport us to the safe house*

Dick and I landed in the safe house with the rest of the representatives.

"Wow Zee. That was amazing, how did you do that?"

"That's a story for another date. Where's Starfire? She's not here yet."

At that moment a bloodcurdling scream was heard.

"STARFIRE!"
