Chapter Eleven

Winnie knocked softly on the door to the room Winnie and Liz shared.

“Come in,” Liz said sourly. Winnie poked her head in, with a worried expression.

 “Hi,” Winnie said uncomfortably.

“Oh,” Liz said, the sourness in her voice remained. Winnie just looked up at Liz.

Winnie sat there not sure what to say. She wasn’t sure if Liz was waiting for her, or if she just didn’t care. Winnie wondered why she had to feel this way; feeling scared of Liz’s response, especially because it was Liz who had called Winnie her sister.

“Thank you,” Winnie said abruptly and disorganized. Liz just glared at her. What more did Winnie have to do. She wasn’t sure but continued. “You really did tell your dad off, and it was all for me, well I guess I should say you did it for me or well I guess you just did it because it was the right thing to do…” Winnie said stumbling over words, hoping Liz would go back to her normal self.

“Winnie, you don’t understand do you?” she snapped. Winnie remained to look at Liz, somewhat with a confused look. “I embarrassed myself and my family and you don’t even come right up to thank me! You weren’t even here when my dad told you to come up here. I was expecting you up here! And were you, NO! Who knows where you were! I just can’t believe that you wouldn’t come here first and thank me. It wasn’t even the first words out of your mouth!”

Tears filled in Winnie’s eyes, and started running down her face. She felt like a total idiot. She had not only underestimated her parents, but she had also underestimated Liz twice! Winnie was crying to hard that she couldn’t talk, but the look on Liz’s face showed that she didn’t care.

“I…I…I…” Winnie tried, but she couldn’t manage it over the tears. She had mumbled some things, but she was pretty sure that Liz couldn’t hear them, or if she did, she was sure that she couldn’t make them out.

“I get it, you’re just a little…” she couldn’t bring herself to say it, “servant girl!”

That was it, Winnie couldn’t take it, she didn’t have any place else to go, and had sort of hoped that Liz was going to be nicer to her than this. She didn’t mean to have upset her, and she really was grateful, but she had to consult with Mary first, and well they had gotten into conversation… but she shouldn’t have to worry about that! They were good friends. Winnie had no idea where she was going, but began to storm out of Liz’s room. Apparently, she was just a nuisance.

 “Winnie, wait! I-”

“You know what Liz, you said, so just save it. All I just want to go home,” she said, collapsing on her mattress, not making it outside as she had planned.

Liz felt so bad that she didn’t even know what to do. Winnie was crying so hard, and in truth, it was all her fault. She didn’t mean to yell at Winnie, she was actually really glad that she had come back, but she just was so raged from what she did at dinner, and how she got sent to her room! That has never happened to her before!

Liz took a seat next to Winnie. “Winnie, I really am sorry. That’s low for anyone to say, but I didn’t mean it!” Silence had fell, and Winnie not saying anything. “I’m really not mad at you,” Liz continued, trying to ignore how awkward this was starting to get, “I really didn’t mean it… I’m just upset because I never get sent to my room… It’s just that it’s kind of overwhelming, but that’s not an excuse,” Liz said, as she started to cry too.

Winnie looked at Liz. She saw how hurt she was, and she had a small feeling that she was telling the truth, but Winnie couldn’t give in that easily for what she had said. Winnie wasn’t one to have self-pity, but if anyone was to be crying, it was going to be her. She had her whole life turned upside down.
