Chapter Song Inspiration: Alive by Sia

The air grew tense as the vampire waited on the border of the designated meeting point. The four-member team had been the only ones to venture inside the unfamiliar territory. The shifters weren't pleased when receiving the phone call and Demetri imagined Tomás's confused expression upon picking up, thinking it was most likely the hunter. The tracker knew he'd regret searching through what little items the young woman hid around the guest room. But now wasn't the time to worry about Kahlen's reaction.
He found the little black book the hunter mentioned days ago. The item sat secured to the underside of a shelving unit tucked away in the closet. No one would be able to find it without actually tearing apart the living quarters. Demetri ignored the names listed among the pages trying to find something familiar. The only note that stood out was a scrawled number towards the back with the simple word Amicus beside it. Friend in Latin. It made him cock a brow. Since when did Kahlen know Latin?
Taking a chance the tracker made the call... and his reasoning behind the conversation at hand without the hunter was met with silence. For a few seconds. Then Tomás roared on the other end in anger. Luckily the tracker held the receiver a good distance from his ear or it would have blown out. Demetri explained quickly before the shifter transformed otherwise it would be hard to talk to him later. They couldn't hesitate in Volturi a moment longer, needing to move.
The alpha expressed his displeasure that so many vampires would be roaming his area in search of Kahlen, yet allowed it for her own safety. There was a catch though: the tracker had to meet him on their land, alone. They didn't trust those that traveled with him. He couldn't refuse.
"Waste of time," Jane stated. "We can search just fine on our own. They will kill you the moment you're alone." No one answered the remark. "I think–"
"I don't give a damn what you think, Jane," Demetri snapped. "If I have to beg them for help I will because the only reason we're in this situation is because you left her behind."
Jane was rather surprised to be talked to in such a way. For once she had no retort. Nor resorted to inflicting her gift on the vampire in retaliation.
"What was it? For once in your life was the great witch twin actually afraid of the challenge in front of her?"
She snarled in warning as the vampire began to feel the stinging of pain. He was on thin ice.
"No, I don't think that's it at all. At least not completely. You've been dying to get rid of her for some time like Caius. Tell me, how does it feel now that Aro doesn't see you as someone of interest and is disappointed with you?"
Surprisingly before the two could have an all-out fight between each other Felix stepped between them. "That's enough," he ordered. "Fighting about it won't help us find Kahlen any faster. We'll stay here, Demetri... But I hope you know what you're doing."
He did too, stepping in.
The further he went the thicker the trees above became and the stench of dog filled his senses. In order to continue pushing forward he cut off that sense. And then it came into view. The thickest tree trunk out of the lot with a large clearing for a few people to stand comfortably and in view of each other. Demetri paused. They were near, so he waited patiently.
Three wolves emerged from the trees, all growling lowly with brows narrowed. They halted at a distance. The tracker merely scanned them, noticing they were not tense for an attack. But that didn't mean they wouldn't be ready at the given moment. Being spaced out meant that three angles would be covered should he try to flee. Yet none of these were the individuals he wished to speak to. One had to be the beta, for wherever the alpha went so did the second in command. Finally Tomás marched through the forest, passing the three shifters and glared dangerously at the vampire. Clearly in the day that passed since their contact it did not calm his anger.
