Author POV-
Blythe's breath caught as the vehicle pulled off, almost as if it wasn't supposed to leave her behind. Her hand reached out for it just as air rushed into her starving lungs and she was back in the dungeon, panting and choking for air. She stood there, with her hand in midair, her mind racing to even attempt to understand what she witnessed.
Her eyes moved around the room when she spotted scratch marks in the wall exposed behind a sheet. With a puzzled expression, she walked towards it before pulling the tattered cloth to the side revealing a plethora of scratches engraved in the bricks. She mentally counted them, finishing quicker than she thought because they were grouped into fives, before doing mental math.
"Twenty years...", she murmured into the quiet air. With a thought and the voice of Hazel racking through her brain, she bolted up the stairs and back into the room, gazing at the footprints. "Her death was sudden but that's not what shocked them. All they found was a note, her body was never recovered. At the time, nobody really batted an eye but now, it's important you read that note in order to end the reign. It's said that the Twins kept it in order to, one day, bring back their mother...".
She took the map out of her back pocket and used it to navigate to the boys' room, moving with a purpose to locate the note expeditiously. It took her a few minutes but she managed to find it under a pillow. She sighed in relief before checking the lighting outside the window to find that the red moon was still at its peak and the night was slightly obscured due to a sudden fog. She shined a light from the flashlight she carried on the note, silently reading it. She thought over the smudged words just as she was hit with another flashback.
"Maman, where are we going?", Laurent drove through the streets in a leisurely manner while his mother was panicking slightly in the backseat. "On a vacation, Laurent. Just keep driving, baby.", she replied attempting to wrap her mind around the fact that Kenneth had made an appearance after 16 and a half years. Blythe looked at Adelaide's unnerving expression from beside her. The twins sat in the front in a blundering silence, not questioning their mother anymore out of respect, and Blythe spotted a sheet of paper in Adelaide's hand as well as a pen.
Blythe watched as the older lady wrote with unsteady hands, observing the way silent tears ran down her face and how she'd swiftly wipe them away as to not alert her boys. Blythe didn't see what was written but she was able to read a few words that stood out.
"Dear children,
I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner...I must go because he's coming for me...I won't be gone forever but...I'm sorry, especially to Larry and Laurent...
I'll miss you...
With love,
Your mother"
A perplexed grimace covered the face of Blythe as a ghost of the note appeared in her hand, causing her to study the one in her hand. Her eyes scanned it with severe concentration and saw the differences.
"Dear my children,
I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner and I understand if you don't forgive me...I just can't bear it much longer...Don't bother looking for my body...
Hopefully you don't take this too hard...I'll miss you.
With love,
Your mother"
Once again the breath of Blythe was taken and her mind processed what she had seen, causing her to the living room...
Just as scratching filled the air...
