Cadence POV
I walked across the stage as my professor placed the academic regalia around my neck. He handed me my degree and shook my hand. It was an accomplishment that took blood sweat and tears to accomplish but I had worked hard to get to this point.
My family was there to support me. My sisters had flown in a few days ago along with Emily and her new boyfriend. Lilly and Ben sat in the audience like proud parents. I could see them smiling from ear to ear. If it wasn't for Lilly I would never be able to reach my goal. I wanted my sisters to see that they could do whatever they wanted if they sat their mind to it.
The past couple of days had been hard. As I looked at my little girls, wonderful memories of being with Evan came to mind. I still loved him and he still owned a piece of my heart but the decisions he made caused us to part.
Maybe I was the blame in some of this. Maybe I should have tried harder to make him see that we belonged together. Maybe I shouldn't have brought up the past so much and just looked towards the future. I didn't want our children in separate homes. I wanted us to raise them together so they would know that we loved them. What about Kara? She had been through so much and she deserved to have two loving parents.
The maybes were a long list but all I could do is ask God to order my steps. He knew what was best for me. I couldn't dwell on the past as I hoped and prayed for a brighter future.
The ceremony was over as we threw our caps in the air. The crowd went wild and everyone hugged. I made my way through the crowd and finally found everyone.
Behind my sisters were Dorothy, Thurman, Emilia, Kara and Evan. I swallowed hard as Evan walked up to me.
"Congratulations," he said handing me a dozen of roses. I gave him a hug as I took in his scent. I knew that scent and I felt fresh tears stinging the backs of my eyes.
"Thank you," I whispered trying to keep my hand from touching him.
"Mommy, mommy," I looked down at Kara as she grabbed my hand. I gave the flowers back to Evan and picked her up. She squeezed my face and gave me a raspberry kiss. Everyone laughed as I buried my face in her hair.
"Mommy when are you coming home?"
I swallowed hard. Evan took her from me and told her to go with Emilia.
"Sorry about that. I wasn't sure if you wanted to tell her or we do it together that we would be taking a break."
"We can do it together. How long are you staying?"
"As long as you need me. I know the girls are coming home in a few days and if you didn't mind, I would like to come with you when you pick them up."
"I'm sure they would like that."
"Good." He smiled that signature Evan smile that made my heart melt. I continued to hug everyone as we walked out the building.
Before I got in the car with Lilly and the family, I heard someone call my name. I turned around to see Jacob.
"Congratulations," he said smiling.
"Thank you." I couldn't help but smile back.
He looked down at me and finally cleared his throat. "Oh this is for you," he said passing me an envelope.
"What is this?"
"Open it and see."
I stood there wondering what it could be. I slowly opened it up and it was a card. On the front it had congratulations and on the inside it had a woman jumping up and down with her cap in the air. I couldn't help but chuckle. Inside the card was another sheet of paper folded up. I opened it up and it was a picture of the physician tower that was across the street from the hospital.
